Developed a rather concerning rattling noise from the engine bay. No warning lights or any other indication of a problem. Sounded like it was coming from the driver side down by the auxiliary belt. Took the belt off and checked each pulley. All ok except the alternator, where there was lateral play, presumably from a badly worn bearing. In my experience bearing failure normally is a whine or screech, rather than a rattle, like a spanner in a saucepan.
Any comments based on others experience?
Assuming I need to replace the alternator, does anyone have any recommendations, there's a huge range of suppliers and prices, even autodoc has a very wide price range for the same part.
Finally, having read posts on here it seems a relatively straightforward job, any hints and tips? I find the manuals are never in clear English and seem to identify items/actions with jargon words and diagrams that aren't obvious as to where they are viewed from.

Update. Alternator replaced and all is well.
The alternator itself is fine, the problem was the pulley bearing and clutch mechanism.
So I now have a spare alternator if anybody is interested.
Was generating perfectly well when removed, car has done 97k and I'm assuming it's the original item.
Anybody in need?
