Smart Key not working (L494)

The main battery went very flat and the AA had to jump start the vehicle. Now neither of the smart keys will do anything. Do they need to be reset or something and if so, any idea how.
Many thanks in anticipation.

My keys stopped working out of the blue a few years ago. I couldn’t get into the car with the remote or keyless entry so had to use the blade in the fob to open the car manually. I got into the car (alarm went off and tracker company rang me) then located the fuse for the passive entry , pulled it out then put back in. It has been ok since. In hindsight it would have been easier just to disconnect the battery for a minute or 2 just to reset the whole system. These cars have very complex electrical systems so I would try this first before taking it somewhere. If you have a lost or broken key policy with your breakdown cover or home insurance that could be another idea……

Hi, it is all very bizarre as I had to leave the car unlocked and didn’t get a chance to do anything about it the next day. However, when we got up the following morning the rear door was partially open so I tried to close it remotely with the smart key and it closed and I was able to lock the car!!

All has then been fine until today when both smart keys have stopped working. I managed to unlock the car using the app and needed to hold the smart key against the steering column to get it to start. Changed smart key batteries but still not working/recognised.

Will have to chat to a garage tomorrow when they open but if anyone has any bright ideas in the meantime it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

I’m assuming you can get into the boot? I would pull the fuse for passive entry which is located behind the right hand side panel in the boot and leave it out for a few mins. You may break a clip doing this so it may be easier just to disconnect the battery and leave for a few mins then reconnect. I think the issue is related to the KVM module. Mine has done this twice in 8 years. Hasn’t done it for 2 years now so I think a reset of the KVM module may do the trick.

Thanks for the suggestion John. Having looked at the fuse list I assume it is the ones for ‘Keyless locking’ I need as I can’t see any for passive entry. It also lists two fuses for keyless locking, fuse 43 and 57, do I need to pull both? One is rated 20amps and the other 5amps.
Many thanks.

Yeah if I remember rightly there are 2 fuses. Pull them both, it won’t do any harm

The continuing saga of the smart key, with apologies for the rambling post!
On Monday I planned to pull the fuses to see if this solved the issue but tried the key first just in case and it worked to unlock the car. However, still needed to hold the smart key by the steering column to get the car to start. A new issue then came up - I normally have the media settings displayed on the instrument panel but now it wouldn't display anything other than the Range Rover image, even when trying to change it via the menu.
On Tuesday everything seemed to be back to normal with the car starting normally and the instrument panel back to my normal display. However, I did get a message when starting to say the main battery was low and to start the vehicle. I took it for a brief run then connected it up to my Ctec battery charger/conditioner which after a while indicated that it was having trouble charging and the battery may need to be replaced.
I am aware from previous ownership of an XKR that some vehicles can be very sensitive to voltage drops and throw up all sorts of odd issues so have booked it in to have a new battery fitted. The current one is the original so just over five years old so am wondering if age coupled with low temperatures lately have been the cause of the issues. Fingers crossed the new battery sorts things out.
