In car entertainment/ nav

Hi all, looking at options for updating nav to android (+Google maps) and have narrowed it down to
A) the merryway system 10.2" screen £1500 fitted. This is the one powerfuluk started playing with. It has been refined and now sold by Android aftershock.
B) the Unique auto system uses existing screen and runs android piggybacked via Bluetooth or WiFi. Self fit which will be ok.

Has anyone fitted either and how are you finding. L494 2014 Chillie Red & Black Roof, black pack

I have the Merryway Android 9 in my L494, like night and day in terms of improvement over the stock unit. There's a few niggles that aren't perfect but still a worthy upgrade. If you do it it's definitely worth changing the heater controls to the MY15.5 onwards that allow the seat heat/cool settings to be accessed via the 2 knobs as if you fit the Merryway unit you have to flip back to the stock interface and then adjust. I installed myself and cost me just over £900 all in (direct import from China as opposed to from LeRay@Android aftershock).

Unique car system here; very satisfied with it! All stock functions doing well; as said IDCORE piggybacks on nav only; so stock nav functionality (and speed limit signs partly) is lost - but everything else functions fine - on wireless BT connection with my phone.
One annoying hick-up (from day one, I have found no cure yet): as phone is connected thru AA and BT car; voice phone connection gets sometimes lost: when aa (for what reason??) switches to BT car connection.
Otherwise 100% satisfied with this solution!

was that £900 for just the head unit or both head unit and ac panel? where did you get them from at that price and are you still happy with it?

i want to make sure i actually get a merryway unit and not a knock off - merryway units seem to be the best quality.

"I've Only Gone and Done it"

After much deliberation and soul searching I have finally decided to upgrade the OEM system to the new set up advertised by Range Rover World.

There were many emails asking for confirmations and verifications as I was trying to both justify the purchase and to understand what; if anything, I would be loosing.

Everything was very positive and then there was the gamble (from my point of view) of carrying out the installation on my own. Range Rover World sent me a YouTube installation video that was specific to their product and I was able to follow it very easily.
In their own marketing video there is a reference to the programming required after the install process (which up until now meant that they would only carry out the installation process themselves). but again using the magic of video calls and me being able to follow guidance, the unit is now exactly as it should be and everything works very well.

Some might say the unit is expensive when compared to other 'Chinese' models, but after researching the whole set up there was only a few hundred pounds difference when comparing like for like and the fact of being able to pick up a phone and speak to somebody knowledgeable in the UK is probably well worth the difference in my opinion.

In a nut shell, I cannot recommend the upgrade enough and the advantages far far outweigh the very few disadvantages "Every Day is a School Day"

Approaching the end of the first year and there have been issues.

There is a slight reduction in air flow from the top vents, but you can still feel it enough.

After a few months the unit was failing to pick up a GPS signal when the OEM system was all okay. After a few months the OEM system then showed the GPS fault which lead to a new GPS antenna being fitted. I was using a GPS splitter, but could not find the initial reason for the unit to show up the issue much sooner and neither could Range Rover World.

Just as that was sorted the steering wheel controls stopped working with the unit. They work perfectly fine with any of the OEM systems, but not at all with the android system. This issue has been ongoing for for nearly 5 months now and it is very annoying. Everything else is working perfectly and it is a great addition to the car.

Range Rover World have never seen this issue before and any responses to my queries have been much delayed. "Every Day is a School Day"

13 month update

Good afternoon all

13 month update.......

I had finally had enough of the small annoyances that the Range Rover World unit was giving me and so I have decided to return the item for them to investigate the issues. I did not receive an update as to whether or not they could replicate the issues I was experiencing, but in fairness to them they have given me a full refund.

After doing a review of what was out their I found an interesting thread on the Range Rover forum where a new Android 13 screen was installed which was also curved. Although no supplier was recommended, I managed to find a few on Ali-Express and in the end went for one from ANZHLE who, so far, have responded to all of my queries and had answered all of my questions prior to the purchase.

You will notice that I have now also installed the lates HVAC controls. This had to be done as the light sensor controlling their brightness is embedded into the left hand switch panel. As this is now wrapped up and stored in the dashboard, the sensor thinks that it is night all of the time and therefore the OEM controls appear very dim.

With regards to perceived 'Chinese' quality. When I had the unit separated to add in the OEM circuit boards I could not see any differences between the new unit and the one I had sent back. I suppose only time will tell, but I can advise that all of the steering wheel controls work and there have been no GPS issues.

Happy to advise any members who fancy an upgrade

The problem is with all these different units they will be from the same 2/3 factories in China, unless a reputable company designed and manufactured their own screen as an after install item you may as well just buy one from Ali Express as they are cheap and if anything goes wrong you may get lucky and get a refund or just buy another one. Or even better pay on a credit card and if it goes wrong within 12 months you can claim it back via the consumer credit act.

I purchased the car play upgrade box for the original screen that just installs car play features , you basically lose the factory NAV option but obviously then can use apple/google maps waze etc. £140 its still going strong 18 months later..

A lot more options on the screen variations through Ali Express ;

I've been considering the Merryway too. Good to hear some real-world feedback.

I’m thinking of getting one I’ve watched the install video but you put a small speaker and mic while installing they said this is for phone calls yet surely it should work thru the original system?

The small speaker seems to be used for some of the downloaded Android apps if the AUX button is not turned on. If using WAZE or Google Maps for navigation then advice from the Fullfatrr forum was to set up the speaker for alerts only.

Using the cars original bluetooth system for phone calls seems to negate the use of the new microphone, but again it may be used for any specific Android apps that have been downloaded and need voice activation. "Every Day is a School Day"
