L320: Gear change hesitation

Afternoon all,

I've had my 2012 SDV6 L320 for around 6 months now and have had been slowly getting more frustrated with the clunky gear change and hesitation to select a gear when pulling away at a round about etc.

I've got a GapIID but was unsure whether to risk resetting the adaptation values due to the milage, 103,000 miles.

Instead after a fair bit of Google research I did a 'soft' reset of the ZF box, more often mentioned in BMW circles.

Couldn't find anything solid on what it actually does, but it seems to have made massive difference to my gearbox. No more hesitation, nice smooth changes and a very slightly increase in MPG.

The process is along the lines of...

1. Unlock car and sit in drivers seat, ignition off.
2. Fully depress accelerator, inc kick down switch.
3. Ignition on, accelerator depressed, no brake.
4. Hold accelerator for approx 30 secs.
5. Ignition off.
6. Release throttle.
7. What a few minutes before driving.

Like I said, no solid evidence behind it but seems to have done the trick for me. Would be interested to hear others results/opinions.

Thank you so much for this - I've just been out for a drive in mine after doing it and although the difference isn't huge, it's a most definite improvement.

I have the same car with the same mileage and I got it six months ago too. I've never been happy with the way the gear box 'felt', it was always a little hesitant and the changes were never as smooth as I'd had with previous Range Rovers.

Now it drives as it should, much easier and smoother, and the gearbox appears to be more 'relaxed' for want of a better word.

Whatever hidden 'magic' this is, it worked for me. Very Happy

For want of a better description,, the Gearbox has a memory and it learns your driving style and changes gear accordingly, so if you drive like your granny it will change gear slowly. Having reset the Gearbox it will learn again, o drive it like you stole it and it will adapt to your new style of driving,,,,, or something along those lines. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

Agreed, I'm just unsure of to what level it resets, as it's clearly not the same as proper adaptation reset via OBD.

Either way, it seems to have some benefit without the risk of upsetting the transmission.

I didn't realise this could be done without some type of diagnostic tool 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
