How to Fix a Stuck Panoramic Sunroof on a Range Rover Sport for FREE

If your sunroof isn’t closing, don’t worry! I’ve been through this issue and found a way to fix it for free. Dealers might quote you thousands of pounds for a repair but try this first before doing anything else.

Try This First:
1. Press upward on the sunroof switch for around 30-40 seconds to reset the sunroof and it will go through a full cycle
2. Use a silicone oil lubricant to help lubricate the tracks and make the sunroof open and close easily.
3. Clear the sunroof tracks of any dust or debris that might be causing obstruction.
4. Try checking the sunroof fuse
5. Disconnect the battery for 10-15 mins
Important: DO NOT USE WD-40 as it can cause damage.


My Situation
If your problem sounds like mine, this solution will likely work for you. Here’s what happened:

I returned home after a drive in my 2015 Range Rover Sport, and the sunroof was open. I left the car with the sunroof open, went inside my house, and locked the car. When I came back 30 minutes later to close the sunroof, it tried to close but stopped halfway. I tried again, but the same problem occurred. The motor seemed to be working because the sunroof would open fully but would only close halfway. I checked for any obstructions in the tracks, like leaves or debris, but it was completely clean. I even tried lubricating the tracks, but still no luck.

If this sounds similar to your situation, read on, and hopefully, this fix will work for you.

Tools You’ll Need:

- Trim removal tools
- Hex screwdriver bits
- Torx bits

Step-by-Step Fix:

Seal the sunroof from the outside to prevent rain from getting in. Use masking tape and strong bin liners to cover the opening.

1. Remove the headliner using trim removal tools. There are videos on YouTube that can guide you on how to do this. You don’t necessarily need to remove the entire headliner—loosening the front and middle sections should be sufficient.

2. Remove the center roof console (where the interior lights are located). You’ll see two motors: the left motor controls the blind, and the right motor controls the sunroof.

3. Manually close the sunroof by using a ratchet with a hex bit. Locate the hole on the right sunroof motor, insert the bit, and start turning. This will manually close the sunroof.

4. Reconnect the center console buttons and press the sunroof close button to ensure it’s fully closed. Then press the open button, switching between open and close a few times. With any luck, the sunroof should start operating normally.


At first, I thought I’d have to spend a lot of money to fix this, but with just a few basic tools, you can save yourself thousands and do it yourself. I asked specialists and various garages, and they said it was a very complex problem that might require replacing the motor and other parts, or even the entire sunroof. The Land Rover dealer quoted thousands for a complete replacement!
