Engine Sound Petrol 3.0 SC v6

Hi. Looking at 2018 3l petrol.

We have the same engine in a 2018 F Pace with 37k. Yes from the front end on tickover it is very tappety but fantastic when you open it up.. it’s actually the same block as the 5 litre and SVR but using only six of the cylinders.. the other two are not machined out…

Thanks for confirming - that this is normal (i think?!).... yes tappety is right, its exactly that that made me question it?

Yes it has been noted by others that the engine is not the quietest on tickover… however who cares when you get the silky howl when you open it up…
Really like the engine.. very smooth and linear.. the only fault I have read about this lump is on early cars there is a plastic water hose that fails and is subsequently replaced by a metal version.. haven’t looked at mine yet!

What? A V8 block but with a chunk of unmachined metal? Shocked 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Yup…they put a fancy counter balance in place of the two cylinders to keep the crank balanced.. the tops of the cylinders are cast over…

Canada 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Baltic Blue

Not sure why that is making that ticking/tapping noise. I had a 2014 RRS HSE with the v6 petrol engine a few years back and it was quite. It never made any ticking or tapping noise 🤔

That could be the supercharger coupler failing.

To confirm, remove the supercharger belt, and turn by hand. If there is play, you will need a new one.

One way to quieten down the engine is to use LiquiMoly oil, I had a ticking as well, LM oil solved that - not sure why, but a lot of the US owners swear by it. --
