Battery woes!

Morning,

3 months ago, I had a total battery failure and had to call out the RAC, who recovered me to the garage where I got the car and they replaced the battery with a new one - they actually said that the original battery was still under warranty and they got it replaced.

Jump forward and have had no battery issues, except once 'battery low, start car' warning a few weeks ago, but car started fine. Last week did two 100+ mile trips and went to local town (30 mins) on Saturday for shopping and again no issues - didn't use the car yesterday.

This morning, nothing! not able to unlock the car at all, worse still can't even unlock the door using the emergency get as is seems fully seized!

I understand the need to 'trickle charge' in winter and I know these beasts such electricity, but are there any usual suspects for a drain that's happening somewhere?

Just going to check if I'm still under my 6 month warranty!

Cheers Iggy/Ieuan

I had something similar with my car a few month back. Every time I washed the car , it wouldn’t start. I can only assume it was opening doors , boot etc while cleaning and the interior lights coming on and whatever else is going on in the background of these cars. After months of denial about the battery been at fault (it was only 7 years old ha ha) as it was fine once charged up and never once not started even after been on holiday for 2.5 weeks I had to get a new battery fitted after I had washed it again and failed to start . I got the AA man who came out to fit a new one for around £280. Car has been fine since (even when it’s been washed) but when not in use for longer than a week I religiously put it on a trickle charger. Low battery on these cars make everything go haywire. Anyway going back to your problem. I would check all the interior lights go out when all doors (and boot ) are shut. Could be something as simple as the boot light staying on or something like that.

Thanks John,

Good thing is the car is still under 6 month warranty as purchased on 31st Jan!!! Have dropped the garage a mail now and will call them after 9.

On Saturday, I essentially got in, started drover 30 mins, shopped, drove home, unloaded shopping that took around 10 mins with the boot open, then locked the car and it was left parked and not used from around 1pm Saturday until I tried it this morning at 6:30.

Nearly 100 certain there was no internal light on, as it wasn't' left with the doors open, except for boot open for 10 mins while unloading.

Will see what RAC can do for me when they come, see if battery has life in it, get it running hopefully and see from there (If they can get in! Rolling with laughter )

I'm going to have to get myself a C-tec tow hook electrics charger, and essentially always leave it on trickle charge. I only have a 5v c-tek charger, I'm guessing I'm going to need a bigger one?

Cheers Iggy/Ieuan

Getting entry could be interesting if the emergency door lock thing is seized, maybe squirt some WD40 in it to see if it frees it up. I have the CTEK MX5 charger (I think) and charges my car fine. I always charge mine via the studs under the bonnet.

RAC have been and gone, and even though they tried, we still can't get into the RRS, so now awaiting specialist locksmith to turn up and hopefully they will have a solution!! Shocked Iggy/Ieuan

Sounds like a nightmare. So the RAC couldn’t put charge in the battery through the tow bar electrics? Saying that , I have the electric deployable tow bar and the electric point doesn’t drop down until the tow bar is out so that too would be a problem. Good luck with this.

Hi Iggy, if you have towing electrics you could connect a battery or conventional charger to the appropriate pins to let you unlock the doors. A C-Tek charger won't recognise a flat battery so won't start charging.
Hope this helps regards
Bill

No way to charge the battery, but....... I have key cover included with my RAC membership, so jump forward a couple of hours and a Vehicle locksmith turned up (Yorkie Car Keys), the bloke (Josh) took one look at the RRS and didn't have the most confident of looks on his face Rolling with laughter

But give him his due, he was inside the car in 10 mins using his special lock picking thing Shocked

He then proceeded to give the Rangie a jump start and then, decided that as the original and useless LR key blade (His words) needing changing, so cut me two new high quality blades, before leaving!

I left the car running for 30 mins, then have hooked it up to a c-tek.

RAC think I have a parasitic electrical drain somewhere in the car, but for now, I'm going to put it on charge when parked up.

My advice to all is make sure you're with a breakdown company and have key cover if you own a Range Rover (Or perhaps buy another brand rather than LR/RR Laughing )

Thumbs Up Iggy/Ieuan
