Turbo problem

Car is a 2011 L320 3.0 TDV6 with 220,000km.

Driving the car last Friday on some backstreets and after making a turn lightly accelerated up an incline while going maybe 20-30kph. Heard a “BOOF” sound and was greeted with restricted performance and loss of power. Could hear the turbo whistling and as I limped home the sounds would change from whistle to moan and then stopped just before arriving at the house. Next day trailered it to the shop and dropped it off. Sunday I went to the shop and looked for the usual suspects, hoses, inlet manifolds, etc. and they were all good. There was some oil, but not huge amounts. After searching decided to fire it up on the lift and couldn’t locate anything significant. Dropped it down and pulled it out since I needed to work on my wife’s car. As I pull in her car I see a puddle of oil which must have come out after lowering my car to the ground. I got her car finished up and had had it with cars at that point. Monday I get in and boss tells me to dig around some more for the problem, so I do. I decide to pull the compressed air coupling hose off and then notice it moves. Then realize the compressor cover has been blown off the turbo. The flange screws that hold it in place all have the flanges bent and the cover is pushed forward about 6mm or so. I can see this is also where the oil was coming from the previous day.

So has anybody seen or heard of a compressor cover getting blown off the turbo? I’m guessing overboost or internal detonation caused it since nothing else can really explain it.

I’m going to be buying a new Nissens turbo to replace it and doing some other work while I have the body off, just hoping it’s solely a turbo issue and replacing it will be the cure and not occur again, or least not while I own it. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
