Uluru, worth it?

SWMBO is planning our next trip Down Under and despite having been to Oz a few times, we've previously baulked at the cost/time taken doing the Red Centre.
Anyone been? Is it actually worth it, which is the best way of doing it and what are the must do's?
We will be in Sydney for NYE (love the fireworks) then a week in a camper van up to Brisbane or down to Melbourne, after which the Red Centre, or not.
TIA

Noosa resident 10 years...expensive now the abos have control/time to do it and you need a guide
Better to take a 4x4 to frazer island. Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.
The avatar is a picture of the man with a big cock.
Learned to 4x4 on 100 mile beach and Frazer Island QLD
Dont spend money on old cars you will never get it back

Thanks for that, it's really the rock that SWMBO wants to see, but we are conscious it's a long way for not a huge variety and we will be bent over cost wise.
