Gearbox reset 4.2 supercharged

Hi All,

Still working my way through the many faults on my RRS supercharged 2005.

Fixed the air suspension and the corroded connectors in the a pillar footwell.

The gearbox was holding onto first gear with the occasional clonk and bang changing up.
I drained the transmission fluid and removed the old plastic pan (than was fun) lying under the car.
Replaced with the separate metal pan and filter jacking up the transfer box to get enough room.

The fluid that cam out was pretty brown assume it’s never been changed and the car has done 160,000.

I have topped up the box as per process part fill then rest when engine/box up to temperature.

Unfortunately the gearbox still has a problem like it’s hunting for gear and slow to change up and down.
There was no debris or fillings on the magnets in the old pan.
Before I succumb and admit defeat is their anything I can do which may cure this like a gearbox reset?

I have down the ECU hard reset shorting the battery leads but that has not work.

Any help or pointers for things to try will be appreciated

I think 160k miles you have had the life of a 2005 gearbox.

Give it 3 days after fluid change for it to relearn. Just incase.

Cheers Andy…

Do you know if their is a reset process for the box or it just relearns itself?

You can reset the adaptions with a gap iid.

It relearns over about 3 days, and shifts worse while it’s learning. I wouldn’t really recommend.

I think it relearns automatically though, just over a longer time.

Thanks again Andy.

I had the car off road and Sorn while working on it.

May tax and insure it next month and go from there.

If it's done 160k miles on the original oil then the torque converter clutch might be in poor shape too. Until you drive it properly you might not be able to tell. A "cattle grid" vibration under load is the classic sign that the TC needs to be replaced. You can reduce the symptoms using things like Dr Tranny but once the TC clutch is contaminated it's never going to be right. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks…I has not got the heavy vibration under load just the delay in engaging up and down.

Will wait until the end of the month now to save a few Bob on the road tax and then tax and insure next month and go from there.

Invested a lot of time in it so far …Rangies are a sort of love hate relationship.

been a pain at times but a nice buzz when you can fix things

On the plus side I can sit in it on the drive and watch the James Bond movies via DVD left in by the previous owner.
Fixing corroded connectors got that going

Gearbox problerly wants a proper reset via gap tool then it's a case of driving it so it relearns as mentioned above.

It took our D3 a week or more to relearn and settle down after adaptation reset. I'm only yhe other side of the bridge so if you get stuck drop me a pm and you can pop over to mine and il plug in my gap tool for you and reset everything.
