How much oil should a 90k miles SDV6 on a 61 plate RRS use?

Hello all,

I guess there is a case for answering this with, none.

However, when that's not the answer, when should I worry? I have had the car since Christmas and covered 2.5k miles. Absolutely love it but there was a huge amount of blue smoke the other day when I changed lanes and accelerated on a dual carriageway, I checked the oil and it needed just over a litre. Since then, I have covered another 700 miles and checked the oil again, it is prompting me for another litre. I haven't filled it up yet, and the reading seems to ask for .5 litre amounts.

The car is relatively smoke free, but occasionally after cruising around and then needing to accelerate there is quite a large amount of blue smoke.

The garage says it is nothing to worry about, indeed they encourage me to drive it a bit harder and use an additive. Is that good advice, or is there something I should have checked-out or some preventative maintenance anyone would suggest?

Thanks, as always, in advance.

Best,
Graeme

Thought so...

There are no drips or visible leaks. I have seen a thread about a fix to the previous TDV6 drain pipe, but that was a sufficiently different set-up; corect?

Best,
Graeme

61 plate, so 2011? The drain pipe issue pertains to 2010-2013 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 models. I’ve done it on my 2011 3.0 TDV6 (2012/2013 got the SDV6 nomenclature). Since it sounds like it smokes when you get into the secondary turbo range it’s likely the issue. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

If you wanted a read, some of the pages apply to the fullfat and disco 4 as well.

Thank you all, very informative.

So here's my thinking, is the issue causing any damage or is it just cosmetic (however embarrassing dumping that blue cloud is) when kicking in on overtake?

I think my options are:
- Convince Land Rover to do the work free of charge. Either a long-shot now or would need to be accompanied with me paying them for a service. Sounds expensive if the latter!

- I'm not sure I can ask the garage that sold it to me to do the work free, as they aren't really responsible.

- Pay for the work through an independent, but it does look like a fair amount of labour.

- Just ignore it and top up with oil as we move forwards

Is your view that I need to get the work completed to avoid something else failing, or should I live with it?

Best and thank you,
Graeme

I think it took me four hours to do mine and I wasn’t rushing. Hardest part is getting the starter out and in. The rest is easy. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Personally I would get it done, these things will not cure themselves and possibly will only get worse, the chances of L/R doing it F.O.C are probably less than zero on a 12 year old car. Depending how long you have had the car you could at least ask the dealer who you bought it from for a contribution to the cost of the repairs, because if you don't ask you don't get. With leaving things what may cost £100.00 today could cost £1000.00 tomorrow, unfortunately some people buy these vehicle do the minimum amount of maintenance possible, buy the cheapest parts possible, then when they breakdown etc. they are called a unreliable piece of crap.

Great Advice

I eventually got the work done. Whilst in there they found that the Exhaust Re-circulation on the left bank had a leak and also fixed another hose whilst doing the work... Three months now and it's running very smoothly. And. No oil usage. Thank you for the advice. I just hoped that I haven't cursed the car by saying there are no problems!!

A 61 plate car will not have a dipstick it has a electronic level sensor/readout.
