What to check before buying a range rover sport

Hello,

I'd like to buy a range rover sport.
I would like to know what to check specifically before buying . to be sure how much i have to spend to get a good car?

Do a RRS have a timing chain; when to change it or the tensionner and the guide and how much is it?
How much to change the front bushes? because, through MOT, I read a lot of RRS with adivce about Front Inner Suspension arm pin or bush?


If you could give me some advice , I will appreciate.

What sort of year are you looking at. The big or small one?

Diesels have belt.
Petrol chain.

TDV8 has a chain, not a belt, just to add to the confusion.

Basically, what are you looking at? Early one (L320), facelift one (L320), second gen (L494)?

Do you want petrol or diesel? Budget? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I thought about 30.SD V6 HSE black auto 4wd

From 2013 with 140 000 miles. Is it a lot?

I saw another one with a good price but with air suspension fault. Can it be serious?

Always worth checking the car out with a code reader, since suspension faults are very scary and deemed extremely expensive, while in most cases they can be sorted out by a smart mechanic for far less than the negotiable discount for "faulty suspension, will take it for parts". Regards etc.,

Hello,

Is it difficult to fix an air suspension default on a range rover 2.7 l V6.
What is the life tome of suspension compressor on this type of car?
I saw a video saying there is a crankshaft design default on this type of vehicule?
It is why a prefer a 3l V 6 engine.
Tell me what you think about these topics,please.

The 1st question is "depending on what is at fault". The suspension compressor replacement would be 3/10 in my book, 4/10 if you don't replace but rebuild the original unit. Valve blocks would be 4/10, airbags 5/10. All these assuming you have access to a lift, tools and have general mechanical capabilities.

Compressor lifetime - again, has it been properly maintained? Intake silencer replaced according to the maintenance schedule? Silica pack for the dryer replaced as per same schedule? I rebuilt my compressor on my 1st RRS when it was 8, my current compressor is 13 and shows no signs of fatigue ("...yet" to be put at the end of this sentence, obviously).

2.7 does not fit the 'Sport' moniker, as the car is way underpowered with this engine in my opinion. It is also, indeed, plagued by a crankshaft manufacturing and oil pump issues. They are carried over to the 3.0 TDV6, however in much smaller amounts. The usual maintenance in the 3.0 is replacing the oil pump with the possibly latest version of this pump, available much cheaper as a part from the brands that used the same engine but do not call themselves "Land Rover". Regards etc.,

Both the 2.7 and 3.0 diesels suffer from crank shaft failures. The 3.0 from what I have seen failed early in its life (30K miles)
If you buy a 2007 you should budget for an oil pump change unless already done. (a year either side will probaby want it too)

My 2012 SDV6 has 151k miles. So it's not necessarily an issue if the history is complete and comprehensive.

If you look on the forum, there is a thread with owners and their mileages. There are SDV6 with over 200k miles on them and 2.7 with 300k++ on them.

Yes, they can snap cranks, no one knows which ones will so if you buy a V6 diesel it is a risk albeit a small one. Other than that risk, if the vehicle is looked after properly (not LR main dealers!) then they can be reliable and long lived. Yes, they will need stuff doing once they're several years old - all cars will, generally speaking - but if you have a decent specialist garage and are prepared to do work when it needs it, then it can give you long service. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Bear in mind insurance and tax will be a lot more expensive with the later cars. It’s worth getting an insurance quote and also seeing what the tax is.

My early (pre March 2006) 4.2 Supercharged petrol has tax at £350 and insurance around the same. Cars registered after 27th March 2006 pay nearly double the road tax, even if it is just a day or two later.

Buying one of these cars is like the throw of a dice Whistle Whistle Whistle

Unless you know a good cheapish indie or mechanic or are very handy with cars, electrics etc.etc. yourself. I would stay away.

Buy the best you can afford, however make sure its been serviced regularly, and well looked after. Even then its a GAMBLE.
I personally don't think, just my opinion tho!
Anyone can guarantee no probs will arrive in the first 12 months, hence garages only giving 3 months warranty. Altho that can be the said with all cars.
The only difference between the Landrover brand and mainstream cars being price for parts ( ££££££ )
Price for Labour ( £££££ ).
Gremlins that are unknown to other brands.
You will need deep pockets to run a bad throw of the Dice, but with a good throw of the dice your grin when driving will be like a Cheshire Cat.

Thank you J-Cj and K-t. I suppose a bit like that extra drink: one knows one shouldn't but want to and the pain and hangover tomorrow is a different story. I have had two L322 FFRRs, a Disco I and two Disco IIs. I currently have a Defender 90 Td5 so know a good local mechanic on first name terms and have had both trouble free motoring and an L322 total engine failure. I have had complete brake failure on a new BMW 3 series and a gearbox (twice) on an Audi Q3.

So maybe its me - but I have had good and bad. I am also quite handy with the forms for the small claims court as a number of firms know to their cost. I dont want to go down that route but buy better at the outset!
