Screenwash one way valves.

Picked up my RRS on Saturday and noticed the passenger side washer jet was a bit weak. Then the next day it has stopped working completely. So thinking it was blocked decided to take it off and clean it out with a pin. I put it all back together then both washers were not working. Noticed there were some fittings inline that looked like check valves or similar. Googling the brand it seems they are one way valves. Took them off and tried to blow through them and they seem to be stuck closed. Managed to use a straight pick and open them again. Are these needed for anything? I’m guessing they help keep the lines primed with screen wash and stop it draining back to the screen was tank? If they are not necessary I might just take them off and use a straight fitting and join the pipes together.
