I have a 2.7tdi range rover sport 2006

when i bought it i noticed the egr system had been blanked off....all runs fine though

however i decided to clean the throtle body and noticed the egr butterfly / intake flap has not been removed. I thought this had to be done as part of the egr blanking, therefore could someone please advise me on whether i should remove the butterfly or just leave it in?

haved googled and there seems to be a mixed response online, with lots saying remove and some saying keep it for safety, so i am a little confused on what i should do with it...

any advice would be great

There is a very specific point in the load mapping (low rpm and moving slowly I expect) where it can cause a flat spot in smoothness or performance.
If you haven’t noticed such a problem then you may as well leave it in.

As a trial, with the butterfly visible, turn the ignition on, ensure the flap is fully open, and then unplug the motor.

Just to be clear No Expert are you saying that in a post 2007 you can just blank off the two EGR ports and leave the butterfly to get on with its own life ? No need to remove the butterfly.

PS just spotted that it had a repair and Both ERG valves were replaced at £182 each....I thought there was one ...??? 2009 2.7

2005/2006 you should be able to blank off no problem.
2007 can be hit or miss.
2008+ it’s better to have programmed out in the ECU or remove the butterfly and blank off.

There’s an EGR on each bank. Look at the throttle body, see the two metal pipes coming off left and right, follow them to the EGRs. You can see them on my 3.0 and are similar on your 2.7:

I spoke with a land rover mechanic yesterday and he said the same thing - just leave it in - doesnt cause any problems. I asked if it also provided overrun protection but he just said no, but leaving it in is fine and wont hurt anything.

I think you you were to watch the butterfly when turning the ignition off, it will close. Therefore by default it has overrun protection

Checked on my 2.7 and its as your photo, Can you just block off the two pipes at the butterfly end and then leave it to get on with it or is more required? I have no problems with my 2009 but dont like the idea of putting exhaust onto the inlet valves . Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

2007 they started tying the EGRs into the car’s systems. By 2009 they’re fully monitored and certain criteria is expected or you get the check engine light. This is why having them mapped out of the ECU is the recommended way to deal with them. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
