I had the gear lever go stiff on me which is a common problem when the gear lever pivot coming out of the gearbox becomes covered in crud. Some replace it with a new one, but I just cleaned it up and gave it a bit of lubricant and it's been fine since. Could this be your problem?

Wow thanks for your reply. I've had a thought and I'll feel this morning. When I raise the car then try to deselect P and see how it feels. If clinky you might have nailed it. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue. |

Try putting it in access mode with the gearbox in N and the handbrake off.

I often use Access mode and have got into the habit of selecting this before I come to a complete stop so that the suspension has time to adjust. Then into N and put the handbrake on before selecting P just to reduce strain on the little pin in the gearbox that locates when you select P. Don't want 2.5 tons all pressing on that little pin especially if parked on a hill. Robin

It has made a difference as you all say above. Stop, into N then lower, handbrake on and into P.

Great so hear Steve. Now just go one better and keep it rolling as you select Access mode and keep it rolling until Access mode is done. Then handbrake on etc.
