Switchable EGR valves (possibly)

I picked my caravan up from storage last week and as soon as I got on the road a couple of faults came up on dash so I stopped and ran a scan with car scanner on my phone (something to do with bcm) turned the car off and restarted faults gone as usual however I left the scanner on but in dash mode monitoring egr and some other stuff. On the 4 mile trip back home I noticed the egr valves remained shut whatever revs or gear etc the car was doing. Anyway as soon as I unplugged the 7 pin plug from the car the egr’s kicked back into life then I thought can I fool the car into thinking its got a trailer on. I got a spare 12n plug and wired 2x 21 wat bulbs to the indicator terminals and ground terminal plugged in and again egr valves off so put the bulb end of the wire in the boot and went for a drive and egr valves remained closed at all times. The down side of doing this is that the trailer light on the dash flashes with the indicators (I can live with that) and the rear parking sensors are disabled (easy work around with a relay from reverse light maybe) I didn’t try the rear fogs but I suspect they will be disabled and I haven’t thought of a way round that yet but If I do I will make a more permanent solution by tapping the trailer indicator wires behind the left panel in the boot and use resistors instead of bulbs, add a switch on the ground side to turn them off when actually towing and also a relay from the reverse light to enable the rear parking sensors to work. I’m away next week so when I get back I’ll do a bit more investigating and trialing. I may possibly do some investigating with savvyCan at some stage to see if I can find what bit or byte disables the egr’s on the can bus. 2008 RRS 2.7 TDV6 S Poverty model

Interesting about the EGR.
But I believe the ABS or stability control or something works differently when a trailer is connected or not. I'd be concerned about tricking the car into believing it has trailer connected when it doesn't have a trailer. Pete

Well I did wonder about other settings changing in the car but then thought how can the car tell the difference between a 3 ton trailer and a 300kg trailer or even a bike rack just by the lights. I did think maybe by the weight on the suspension but then if you have a 1.5 ton trailer and a nose weight of say 80kg or a small trailer with a nose of 80kg and 100kg in the boot the car has no way of telling how heavy the trailer is that you are towing or not in the case of a bike rack with a light board on it. I may be missing something else but I wouldn't think the car would alter ABS or stability without knowing the trailer gross weight which could be between 0 and possibly 3.5 tons. 2008 RRS 2.7 TDV6 S Poverty model

To satisfy my own curiosity, I just had a look at the workshop and owners manual and yep no mention of ABS or stability control change with trailer attached. My bad.

It does mention that when automatic gearbox is in trailer mode it will retain lower gears longer. It doesn't say how it decides to use 'trailer mode' eg load on gearbox or trailer electrical connector. Manual also says when trailer detected on electrical connector the vehicle will not automatically change suspension height when certain off road modes selected or when over 160kph, though you can still manually change height.
And also the reverse parking sensors which you already mentioned.

Still interested to hear how you go with the effect on EGRs. Pete

Would it do the same if you increased load on stop lights? Then the trailer light would not flash. Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

As far as I can tell the car sends pulses through the indicators to see if something is attached. I may try disabling the towing option in the CCF to see if that allows the fog lights and parking sensors to work. I think the dash indicator is something that would have to be accepted. I still plan on getting my egr's mapped out and removed totally at some point. I won't have time to play around with it now until end August. Even as it is though it could provide a tempory fix for a bad egr while say waiting for parts or garage time as blanks could be used ( in the case of stuck open egr valve) without removing the flap in the intake. 2008 RRS 2.7 TDV6 S Poverty model
