Given the performance, low tax (for an early one), and relative fuel cost differential over a diesel (mileage dependent of course), I decided to get back into a 4.2 SC rather than a diesel. My thinking is that being more of a specialist car and with less issues, it’ll be the sweet spot in RRSs in years to come.

Everything is obviously conditional on condition, but chuck the original Top Gear review with the tanks into the mix and to my mind, more people will cherish and look after the SC than a diesel ?

Tidy 4.2 or 3.6 IMO

As Disco_Mikey suggests, the 3.6TDV8 would be up there. Shame it's not on your poll as it's probably the sweet spot between decent grunt and fuel usage. The low down pull meant that it could live with the 4.2 in some in-gear situations. Obviously nowhere near in 0-60mph but who does "emergency starts" these days?

I could see an original launch 4.2 in Vesuvius Orange being a collector item but otherwise none of them are likely to be future classics. I'd have thought a 5.0SC would be a classic before the 4.2 because it's properly quick where the 4.2 is just warm hatch quick.  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Bit the bullet and had a chat with a meerkat to see what renewing the insurance now would be for my 2005 4.2 SC.

Despite not producing the best MPG, I get cheap road tax (pre March 2006) and no hike in premiums. It's also a hoot to drive, supremely comfortable and I love it.

I can see these starting to become more sought after by those who want the RRS experience without the stupid insurance costs. Being petrol, they're also more reliable than the diesel and maintenance and spares is no problem.

Iv been slowly restoring mine, light at the end of the tunnel. The thing these have going for them is ulez compliant iv seen more and more supercharged rrs around my local area. Looking around prices are anything from 4.5k upwards. And yes I think they will become a classic. I had a P38 I fully restored but being a 4.6 wasn't ulez my L322 petrol isn't ulez so is in storage waiting on a new London tosser to scrap the tax zone.

A lady local to me when walking by my house when I was washing it asked how I was finding the kharn tax seeing as I have a range rover . I explained it was petrol which surprised her and it was ulez compliant she was shocked and off as her 2015 range rover isn't and she can't drive it anymore as a daily.

I said she could sell her 2015 buy a 2005 or later supercharged and still have change......she went away to have a look.

Yes yes they will become a classic I did want one in orange 1st edition my self but couldn't find one one that did come up was to much money for me now there is 1 on the bay for 10k lol yeah good luck with that.

A black on black supercharged would now be my sweet spot.

i belive there are about 200 left ( early models 05-06 lower tax bracket ) in the UK, the only people buying seem to be the "green laners" who trash the cars & then scrap.
i would say they might become a "classic", but with no value attached, as there are very few buyers.
