United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 S Zermatt Silver
Oil pump damage

Hi I’m looking for advice please our 2007 Range Rover sport has recently broken down and we have been told it’s engine damage as a result of oil pump failure. I’ve looked at a few sites and it’s seems to be a common problem should the land rover repair centre we have been taking it to for regular services and mot since new have advised us to replace it we have had the car since new? And do you recommend re recon engine and a company that is good please should we go down that route as Land Rover are quoting 6 for the engine and 3 to fit

The common consensus is that the oil pump is usually okay until you do a timing belt change, when the oil pump should be replaced. The timing belt tensioner is mounted on the oil pump boss, which is inherently weak by original design. By loosening and retightening the tensioner bolt seems to weaken it further, together with a new belt (and increased load due to belt tension) seems to drive it to failure. Not replacing the oil pump at this point is sheer recklessness.
