Towing my 2 ton caravan home today up a great big incline on the motorway here in NZ and Transmission Fault came up dash, had no where to pull over and then up another steep incline a couple miles ahead and then Transmission Fault again and also Gearbox overheating message and letter H came up, so managed to pullover and a smell of transmission fluid with smoke coming from side of car, also splashes of transmission fluid over front and side of caravan, after couple of minutes gear knob was stuck in Park and car would not turnover, left vehicle 10 mins to cool off and car started and went in gear normally, luckily there was a one mile downhill drive infront which would have cooled the gearbox down a lot, car drove normal till i got home 10 miles away, where would this Transmission fluid leaked from(breather hose do you think) Help please.
2009 RRS 2.7 tdv6.
Meant to do update ages ago but here we go, drove it to Auto Gearbox specialist following day with no problems they checked it over and said fluid got really hot and came out of the breather I think they said however checked fluid level and condition of auto fluid and was ok so only lost tiny amount, they fitted heavy duty Transmission Cooler and disconnected old cooler, now can drive up the steepest hills with 2 ton caravan and transmission temp stays perfect under heavy load, around 70c to 80c max. Gearbox sweet as a nut absolutely no issues at all, Cheers
