Should I flush the transmission?

The transmission on my RRS 12 needs serviced as it hasn't been touched throughout the car's existence.

I'm not sure whether to get a full transmission flush (I've been warned that this can cause issues) or to get a standard service where the pan is dropped.

What should I do?

personally my self I would stick with the traditional service and drop the pan and change the filter
other owners will say go for the flush
so all I can say is go with what you thunk would be best and your gut feeling

Well with it being 10 years old I would. When I had mine done it was the oldest car, yet the lowest mileage. Mine was flushed as preventative maintenance and I wasn’t carrying any faults, but was the blackest oil. Think there’s photos in my gallery. I suppose there is no right or wrong in which way you choose so long as it gets addressed. What are the costs you’ve been quoted?. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

The costs are what is confusing me.

I’ve contacted a local indie and they’ve quoted me £1000 for the service (I think it’s the traditional drop the pan and change the filter service)

I’ve contacted a garage that specialises in servicing automatic gearboxes (pan method) and they’re giving me a quote in around of £650-£700

Then I’ve reached out to a guy that travels to do flushes and he was quoting me something in around £400.

Because of the car’s age I want to get a flush and have read really good reviews about the guy that does the flushes. Recently got work done to the suspension arms and bushes to the car at a 4x4 specialist shop. They said it would need done but to be careful with it as it can cause issues.

I haven’t had any faults in regarding to the transmission or engine.

If you’re in the 50,000 mile range and first time, do a flush. 100,000 mile range and first time, just drop the pan. Reason being some of the buildup can be sealing things. Flush it all out and you could be in need of changing a bunch of seals.

£1000 for a pan drop is absurd in my opinion. Get the metal pan conversion kit and it’s a bit less labour intensive. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

I agree with NoExpert. If I was in your shoes I’d be flushing. If so in 50/60k’s worth and your still planning to keep the car then flush it. The mobile guy, is that in the province or is he coming across from the mainland?. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Gearbox issues are caused by dirty oil

A flush will remove as much of the old oil as possible, and around 3x times as much oil as a drain/filter replacement Thumbs Up

The car is at 110,000 miles. Haven’t had it for a year yet but plan on keeping it. He’s in the province about 50 miles away.

my preference would be a flush/transfusion, had a previous RRS done (2006) with no problems, did not improve anything but there was nothing wrong to start with either, done for preventative reasons.

also another RRS I drained the sump (2010) (about 3.5L) and refilled with a plan to do another 2 or 3 drops over the coming months
but sold the car before I got round to the next drop Rolling Eyes

recent purchased a D3 (2008) no record of any gearbox work and just bought 10L of correct oil for £40 so thats just (about 2 hours ago) had its first drop of oil with a plan to do another 2 more drops, IF we still have the D3 next year might treat it to a flush/transfusion then Whistle

12m ago had a flush by Bodsy, at around 174k miles, found oil was black and deposits, so needed a change

Now done another 10k and still drives fine, no errors or problems changing gears etc, so happy had it done

now have a couple of sensor issues, but nothing to do with gearbox RRS L320 2010 facelift model 3L TDV6

I've had a couple of gearboxes flushed and never had any issues. Both boxes were noticeably smoother on shifting and on both occasions i was surprised at how discoloured the oil was. Well worth having it done.

Had mine done when I got it 3 years ago on the advice of my indi, smooth as silk since having it done it had done around 80,000 miles at the time.
