The Restorers Journey

In order to justify their keep my Rangies have to earn their living - after 5 years with me I'm just about to wave farewell to my 21 one year old P38 4.0 SE

Its been great - but I'm looking for something with a few more creature comforts - I'm a classic car restorer and the primary use of the RR is for towing my car transporter trailer - I only cover circa 5k miles per year - Both the tow vehicle & trailer are a mandatory requirement of my business

After a searching for a while I managed to find this 2007 TDV8 HSE - I wanted a low mileage / low owner vehicle with service history

Its very straight & clean - Now although I reside in Hampshire I'm a Yorkshireman - I don't mind paying a fair price for anything but I refuse to pay dealers forecourt premiums - Hence this was purchased within the trade - no warranties etc - you pays your money & take the chances - It came with known faults and being within the trade I don't mind a bit of work - which has it turns out is just has well - This then is the start of my RRS journey - There's more to come (A lot more)

Welcome to the forum, grumpynorthener (from another grumpy northerner, slightly displaced south)!

Now can you move that P38 out of the way so we can see the XK120? Smile (At least I think it's a 120?) 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Welcome… you get rid of the P38 just as the values increase!

I miss ours… we had a his and hers … and despite their atrocious reputation for reliability ours were perfect over ten years of heavy usage… .. in fact I made money on them amazingly! Bought the latter Holland and Holland version for £4K and six years later sold it for £11k … gutted to see her go really…
Needs must and it paid for a late FL2 for daughter!

Love your repair work! Beautiful cars… amazing when you think how complex those body lines are!

Welcome , look forward to your updates on the RRS I also bought a low mileage TDV8 2 years ago with a very comprehensive service history cost me about £1500 to get it to my standard at a brilliant independent, but it really is a superb vehicle.

Faults then - Suspension compressor was playing up

Removed

And a new unit fitted

I cleaned the surface rust from side of the chassis rail and treated the area prior to fitting the new unit

Next was the starter motor - the solenoid was sticking on occasions - no easy task on TDV8 - in fact its a swine - ended up disconnecting the hydraulic pipes to the front anti roll bar in order to gain the clearance required to slide the starter out

But eventually I won

Whilst sorting the starter out I noticed a leak on the underside of the Dynamic Response pump

Replacement of crimped type hose clip resolved the leak but again a very difficult job to access & undertake

Looks like the air filter had been there while

Hence that was replaced

Along with the pollen filter

Checking the wiper arms & spindles was a good move - they were on the verge of seizing through dissimilar metal corrosion with the spindles being steel & the arms a aluminium alloy - cleaned them up and applied a smear of copper grease for ongoing protection

Andy K - I fitted a new one - given that its a hassle job of removing / refitting on the TDV8 the option of just fit new & forget became quite appealing

With the car still up on stands

I changed the fuel filter

Now despite following the manuals stated process for changing the filter, refilling the new filter with fuel prior to fitting along with the turning on / off procedure with out starting the engine etc - the dam thing still air locked - It shouldn't its a common rail diesel and should virtually self bleed

Anyhow if you are ever in the same position there is a schrader valve here - rigged a adaptor from a cycle pump to a small bulb type handpump and managed to draw fuel to that point - this then enabled the engine to start - Other stuff completed was a oil & filter change - I like to use a flushing additive with diesels

Apologies my photo editing program appears to have over reduced a batch of pics in size - its had a severe telling off - just attempting to resize to something that's viewable but not getting anywhere - I'd better just stick to restoring cars I think

Tow bar - The LR detachable swan neck doesn't really suit my needs and its also very expensive - I'm much better off with a fixed bar that I can add a drop plate to to reduce the height of the tow ball - this makes it much easier for hitching the car trailer to and also for loading / unloading the trailer by lowing the RRS to access height on the suspension

The LR dedicated wiring kits are stupidly priced - PF Jones offer high quality dedicated wiring kits for tow bars which are equal if not better in quality than the LR kits - better still they are half the price of the LR kits - Link here: https://www.pfjones.co.uk/

Whilst under the rear of the car I noticed that I had a hydraulic leak around the rear anti roll bar actuator - cleaned it up to see if I could identify the source - it would appear to be the metal neck on one of the two feed / return pipes - it also looks like the rear anti roll bar will require replacement at some stage in the future too (its a common problem on these)

The rubber on the centre bearing of the rear propshaft is also split - I'd better order some more parts then !
