AMBER ENGINE LIGHT - RECONMENDATION'S FOR A OBD READER

Hi guys,

Hope you're all well.

Just had the 150,000 mile 10 year big service done on my 2012 5.0ltr RRS sport.

In the end i went with Rockar LR as they were coming in the same price as some good indy specialists. And some of the cheaper Indies were missing major parts that need to be changed on their quotes for this service, so i decided to avoid them.

The first two warm start ups once i got the car back felt quite lumpy and a bit vibrate-y as the car settled down to 1000rpms. So i informed them of this, but after driving it around it around for a few days it seems fine now.

But for the first time of owning the car for the last 3 years the amber check engine light has just come on today. Weird this has happened a week or so after having this big service. I know if i take it back to them i will probably be charged for them to look it over. And it will probably be something that is unrelated to the service.
So i thought i should buy a OBD Reader first to see if it would give me a fault code first (been meaning to buy one of these for years).

If any of you have any good recommendations for one please let me know. I would love one that tells you the issue in a sentence rather than just a code which i would then have to google.

Also one that would work with most cars would be great incase i change brands in the future. But i'm hoping to stick to RR's for life so if its best to get one especially for RR's then i'm happy to do that.

Finally it seems like its ok to drive the car with solid amber light from what i've read on goggle? but if it starts blinking or shows a red engine light that's when we need to pull over is that correct?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated, i'll spend some time on goggle later today looking for the best ODB and i'll just pray when i finally get one that this is a tiny issue and nothing that will bankrupt me 🙏🏼 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

I don't know anything about the one that you have linked to but agree, it does look good for the price.
Maybe others that have this device will comment.
Personally, I have used the GAP IID tool for the past 4 years and although it is expensive (comparably) it does do much more such as live readings, suspension calibration, turn on/off additional features (such as 3 flash indicators- depending on model), gearbox reset/calibration and much more including fault reading and clearing and flashing software changes to the ECU.
At nearly £500 it still has paid for itself over the years.
It comes with one licence to your VIN number but can be transferred to a new vehicle by purchasing another licence for £25.
It seems to be the tool of choice on this forum! 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?

I have this https://www.autelstore.co.uk/wholesale/aut...anner.html

It is cheap and reads and clears codes, read the specs on the website etc to see if its compatible with your MY2012

Hey Scrumpy,

Thanks so much, i only searched the forum for amber engine light and not scanners. Should have done that first.

But thanks so much for the below. I have heard of the IID tool before. Jesus £500. I'm really bad with mechanics so this one might be more than what i need. But in the service they wanted to charged me one hundred odd pound to charge and re-test my battery. So your tool. Would prob help me work out what's happening with the battery if it can live read.

Also great to know you can transfer to any car brand for £25 makes it feel like it will last a life time.

Will research them asap.

Thanks again for help Thumbs Up 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

I’d start with a £10 wifi ODB2 scanner from Amazon and free software on your phone. RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

May be a bit overkill for your needs, my lad has one of these and it does cover a lot of vehicles with no need to buy a licence.
It does read codes on the RRS, and tells you where to look, as compared to just giving a code. The freeby it comes with currently lives in my glovebox.

No worries.

Just to clarify something about the GAP IID tool. It is transferrable to other Range Rovers but not other brands as far as I know as it is specifically designed for LR, hence the price and better options. Despite the price it will pay for itself and even keeps good value if you want to sell it later on!

Edit: Maybe of interest, or not but I was on the GAP IID FAQ page looking for something unrelated and came accross this useful definition of differences between Gap IID and cheaper ones;

Here’s a quick general explanation into diagnostic tools/systems.

There are 6 basic functions for a diagnostic system:

Fault (DTC- diagnostic trouble code) reading and clearing
Live Value display
Editing the car configuration files (CCF)
ECU Flashing
Executing service routines/manually actuating components (testing function)
Initializing, calibrating, or programming new components

Starting with the lowest priced units, even a 50 $ generic code reader will read and sometimes clear the codes on anything that is emissions related (engine+drive train). The downside is that they will not work on all vehicle systems, including manufacturer specific fault codes (air suspension, etc). All other features in the list above are not supported on generic code readers except for a few emission related live values.

The IIDTool will allow you to read and clear manufacturer specific fault code on all ECU’s and give you access to all other features listed above. This is why it is called a complete diagnostic system for your Land Rover. 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue
