255/55/20 - General Grabber AT3 vs Falken Wildpeak AT3WA

Hello.
New to RR... I just got my first RRS (HSE 2017). Prev. car was first generation VW Touareg with all the off-road whistles (OEM). So quite excited about what the RRS seems to offer!

So I am thinking about the General Grabber AT3 vs Falken Wildpeak AT3WA. (255/55/20)... not too many AT options of this size. Specifically, neither the ATX nor the AT3W seem to be available. I am looking for all-year tyres (living in London, no storage space), and all-terrain (planning to make good use of the terrain response system).

Any suggestions are very welcome or comments on any of these (or other A/T) tyres?

I have Grabber AT3 tyres on my L320 in 275/40/r20. Generally very good. Slight loss in handling if pressing on but this is to be expected with an all terrain tyre versus a normal road tyre. Off road the AT3 is generally good but has been defeated by very muddy conditions.

Haven't tried the WildPeak but have run 255/55/19 Grabber AT3 before. Decent tyre that's very good on road for an AT. Good in snow, not great on ice tarmac but then very few tyres are. Would fit them again - might have to if I can't find any 255/55/19 Pirelli Scorpion AT+ in a month or two's time.

What sort of off road work are you planning on doing? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thx for tips and comments. Planning to do some guided off-roading tours, mainly. Heading to North Wales in two weeks..

I decided to go with the WildPeak. Someone that does a fair amount of off-roading told me that he has seen side punctures on the Grabbers, somehow often.

Unfortunately Pirelli was not an option on size R20. Let me know when you are on the market for tyres and I can tell you how it is going with the Falken.

Silverstone, how have you found the grabbers on wet roads, there is a tyre review that trashes them so I am worried. Have they affected the ride much? My Land Rover specialist sees a lot of RRS with drive train issues with people running larger diameter tyres so says stick with standard sizes. He actually has a RRS parked up with 275/45r20 in his yard waiting for repair. Trouble is the tyre choice is then 275/40r20 or 255/50r19 and the only AT tyre I can find for either is the General Grabber AT3. So I keep my 20" rims and have the same as you or swap to 19" (which I have) and put a set on them. What do you think? Thought the 19 would be the better choice but they will have less rubber on wet tarmac making the braking distances even worse. Plus I will have to have the 19's rims refurbished before I use them so even more money. Advice needed!

I have run both 275/45 x 20" and 275/45 x 21" on L320 sports for at least the last 10 years and have never had the slightest transmission/drivetrain issues.

Oh my goodness Col I was born in Hawkes Bay!! Parents bought me to UK when I was 6 months old and I have no memory :-/
A lot of people are running those tyre sizes right but They have seen multiple vehicles with problems so I am too scared to risk it!

I have completed about 11,000 miles on the 275/40 x20 (V rated) General Grabber AT3 tyres. On the road the ride is no worse. The only comment would be that if you are driving 'spirited' then the turn-in is not as good as a pure road tyre. As yet, no mechanical issues leading from the fitment of the tyres and the wear is very even. Note though, that I did have the tracking checked and adjusted just after the tyres were fitted. There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

Grabbers are perfectly fine on wet roads, I've never had a problem, particularly if you drive within your limits. I run 255/55/19s, the slightly higher sidewall being better for off-road driving. I've used AT3s for coming up to 40k miles now and the only sidewall issue was getting pushed out by a bus coming into my lane in London and clipping the central reservation Rolling Eyes

Thanks Pufftmw. I will go with the Grabbers. I just need to choose between 275/40r20 and 255/50r19 bearing in mind refurbishing the 19's will add £250 onto the tyre change.
Any thoughts on this choice anyone? Mostly road use but early next year I will be moving tonnes of harcore with a tipper trailer over several months to a hole in a farmers field, hence the AT's.

The 20 inch has less tyre wall and, in my opinion, does compromise the tyre slightly off road compared to a tyre with a taller tyre wall. There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

255/55/19s all the way. You need a bit of sidewall flex to assist grip, so definitely get the most you can.
