Modification Part 3
Modification 3 is fitting the updated A/C Panel.
There are a few panels, basically the same but with different pictures on the screen. The one I went for shows the all terrain screen.
Ordered from China again. Different company from where I bought my lights.
One week delivery once more Fedex. This time a f###up, will put on another thread.
Looked at Powerful UK video about Centre console update & also ZiFang video on changing A/C Panel. Between them, I thought I would see the pitfalls.
As usual everything basically fell off on these videos. No chance. I shall be using the phrase “Brute Strength & Ignorance” (BSI) as it will be described from now
1. Rear heater panel. Zifang just undid 2 screws ,quick tug & off it came. Did that hard tug , nothing. Checked Powerful, they undid the facia panel, hardly touched it & off it came. I took off facia panel. Hard tug, nothing. Tried trim tool around area in video, nothing. After much pulling, grabbed one bottom edge & BSI & with a loud crack, that side released. This is not for the faint hearted as with the loud crack you expect just that, a big crack, but it was ok. Opposite side BSI, same result it released. Up top, another bout of BSI for both sides & it was finally off.
2. The part I was dreading, removing the facia. Powerful basically blew on it & off it came. ZiFang, a wee bit harder, but fairly easy. Me, eventually after trying from the outer edge passenger side with no joy, trim tool in about the area below the parcel shelf door button, finger in pulling it with no joy. BSI again with subsequent loud cracks, it released. Bottom clips were not too bad & off it came checking it was not broken anywhere.
3. Hockey sticks as Powerful describes them was next. As usual theirs was easy, ZiFang used trim tool but easy. Me, you have guessed it, f ###ing impossible. Tried everything, pulling, trim tool, nothing. Had a think about it, needed leverage where none was available. Lightbulb moment, bit of string (see pic) I managed to get a length of string in the end & with a lot of patience & help of a thin screw driver got it to the inside of the hockey stick. Slid the string further up, then with much BSI gave it a hard pull, the noise was unbelievable, thought I had broken it but it came out intact. Repeated for the other side.
4. Removed the old A/C panel & mounting bracket, then the surround on the main screen. Easy enough. One thing though, there is another connector in there that does not do anything. You can see it on ZiFang video. Just left it alone.
5. Offered up the new screen. At first thought it was the wrong one as the screw holes did not seem to line up. There was another 2 screws in the way, so had alook at the video. Yes, there were 2 screws shown, then in the next frame they had vanished. So off they came, bit of pushing then it all lined up. Connected power socket & screwed into place. Put all screws in but do not tighten until they are all in. Stops them fighting each other if not correctly positioned
6. OK, moment of truth. Got the keys & started up. Yes, it worked, so relieved.
7. Re-assembly time. Before starting, I gave the console are a good clean & polish. Same with the hockey sticks.
8. Hockey stick back in. Lot of positioning & re-positioning, banging to no avail, BSI once again then by chance I thumped it on the centre of the curve. Aligned its self, no problem. (see pic). Did the other with my method, dead easy.
9. Facia, the bit I was dreading. When I removed it, some clips were in the facia & some in the bodywork panel. Initially I was going the put them all on the facia panel, but had a think & decided that wherever they were, they were in the correct position as on the bodywork they were in slots that were fairly large, so could have had some misalignment. Clipped in bottom edge first but it was not aligning around the main screen. Tapped it. Bottom seemed ok, but still not correct. Ach well, it worked before BSI. Gave it a good thumping & it all fell into place. Yahoo!!!!.
10. Better check it, yes still working
11. Nearly there, only the rear heater panel. Bit of thumping but fairly easy.
12. Finished thank f###.. Summary, If you’re a bit concerned about taking your car apart & breaking something, yes be worried but nothing happened to me. I found that I was pulling fairly hard & nothing was working so had to resort to BSI. You do get a shock when bits eventually let go with the noise & you expect something is broken. Car looks a mess when its all apart & you wonder why you are doing it. Take your time, try to lever near a clip as when one lets go, the others follow.
13. That’s all my mods done, well, not quite, one that I was not going to do but changed my mind. Part coming tomorrow.
