Fuel Filter Replacement

I finally got around to replacing the fuel filter on my 2010 TDV8 on the weekend and was expecting to find the picture below:

I thought how hard could this be, plenty of room, easy access etc.

Upon removing the plastic transmission cover (secured by five M10 bolts) I found a catalytic converter just infront of the heat sheild - where did this come from. Upon removing the heat shield (from behind the converter) (secured by three M10 bolts) I found a multicore wiring loom running in front of the fuel filter and which had a disconnect plug which was a pig to release. I had to move this multicore loom asside to remove the fuel filter.

After moving the multicore loom and disconnecting the water sensor I undid the filter. Like a fool I tried to remove the fuel filter below the catalytic converter requiring tipping the fuel filter on its side spilling diesel fuel all over my arm and on the paving below. I was lying on the ground with minmal access under the car (suspension raised and with axle stands).

The trick was to remove the fuel filter above the catalytic converter. This did not require tipping the filter on its side (lesson learnt).

The hardest part replacing the filter without the vehicle on a hoist was the minimal clearance and the fact you could not see where the filter mounted - by feel alone.

After allowing the filter to fill with fuel it started first time.

I glad this task is only required every couple of years.
