EGR blanking with pipes fitted

Hi all. New to the site. I am having EGR issues: trouble starting in cold because valves sticking open, slow to pull away from junctions when engine is cold, stalling in neutral after starting up.
I've decided to blank the EGR valves but with the new 2018 MOT rules I'm not sure what to do. The garage won't do this for customers anymore as its their neck on the line but I can't find any info on how you blank the system while keeping the pipes in place so it will pass MOT.

will this work:
- blank at EGR end and leave pipes in place inside air intake manifold and remove butterfly valve?

I guess for this to work there would have to be a pretty tight seal between the EGR outlet and the pipe as not to suck up unmonitored air?
Any tips of pointers in direction or to other threads would be very useful!

Thanks

please tell us what age car you have and what engine model.

Put it on your profile or sig and we won't have to ask again, and reduce delay in replies

Hi Andy thanks for rapid reply! Hopefully my sig will be at the end of this message.

In addition to my thought above, other option would be blank the pipes at the valve end with pipe attached and then leave other end of the pipe unattached with the air intake blanked as it should be, but maybe this is a dumb idea? 2005 2.7 tdv6 RRS Vin 6A

undo the pipe at the EGR.
Insert a blanking shim
And re connect the pipe.

Test drive for a day or 2
Then remove the butterfly flap. Don't forget!

after the car has been running well and warm. Switch off.
You could try unplugging the EGRs, and see if that leaves them in the close position.
That may be a work around until the blanks turn up or a long term solution.

You could even try one at a time and drive for a day

I had mine done some 4 years ago. Blanked at the intake side but leaving the pipes in place. Also the butterfly was removed the the arm was kept in. No problems or warning light and never noted at any of the MOTs. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Thanks both. This makes sense. However I imagine its more tricky to get a tight seal at the end of the pipe using a single plate than it is when removing the pipe completely with 2 plates. Runs the risk of pulling in unmetered air and having the same issues that a stuck open EGR valve causes? 2005 2.7 tdv6 RRS Vin 6A

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall seeing some blanking plates with seals set into the face.

I know I’m in minority here but I removed all the pipes on mine and fitted a blanking kit, the end pieces that fit into the inlet manifold will be caked in gunge so they need removing and clean the Y piece up after you remove the butterfly mine was yuk black oily s##t. I’ve unplugged both EGR’s gone through two Mot’s with no issues.

I’ve got a petrol BMW M52 engine which I removed all the air pump gubbins and blanked years ago that goes through every year. Steve

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions. thought I'd finish this off by explaining what I did. Fitted blanking plates at EGR end between the pipe and the EGR. I then removed the butterfly valve and fitted blanking plates to the manifold. So just had the EGR pipes in place but where they meet the inlet manifold i just have open ended pipes. As the engine cover can't be removed for the MOT and when you look down the side of the engine you can still see the pipes in place. Smile

There is a minor hesitation when pulling away if it’s left in.

If you are happy with the way it drives, Leave it in.

But make a mental note!
