Check engine light, P0234, DPF FULL, throttle body sticking | |
I have a 2017 RRS 3.0 diesel - has been wonderful, with one broken bolt (OK, so that required the engine out to replace) from new in 40k miles.
I got an amber check engine light a few months ago. Bought a code reader - P0234 (77) turbocharger engine boost condition - limit exceeded. Didn't have to do anything, it went away on its own after a few restarts. I thought it was one of those things. I've had an SOS system limited functionality message once or twice (happens every year in the summer) which the dealer just cleared and told me to let them know if it happened again. I'll mention it when it goes in for a service.
All was fine until yesterday when the orange engine light came on again. This time, however, about 10 miles later, the "DPF full" red image came up with a message to take the car to the dealer - and the engine went into restricted performance mode, maxing out about 40mph. No amber DPF warning, straight to red. I was a bit surprised about that, as although I don't do huge mileage, in the last 3 months I have travelled from the southwest of England to Yorkshire, Scotland and the very edge of Wales with a 220 mile non-stop motorway run (and no roadworks) only 6 days ago.
At first I thought I'm going to have to pay for a new DPF, or someone / a gadget to do a forced regeneration, but a bit of searching on the forums suggested it might be the throttle body sticking. Unfortunately the DPF will not clear while that P0234 error code is present. I guess it was bad luck to get the intermittent error when the DPF was almost full (well, good luck in that it's now fixed).
I have an extended warranty so called LR Assist (with the little button). They arrived less than an hour later and I explained the problem, plus what I had googled. The chap looked at the throttle body, could see it was stuck and unstuck it fairly simply. It didn't look gummed up at all (looked almost new) but it was certainly sticking. He then regenerated the DPF by plugging in his laptop and taking it for a drive - during which he said the regeneration kept stopping, as it would stick again. Once it was cleared, he replaced the throttle body with one from his van.
Thoroughly nice chap. Had a coffee but didn't even want a bit of cake.
Makes the extended warranty with LR assist worth it. I'll be renewing it for both cars. Once "unstuck", he said it can sometimes be difficult to get the dealer to replace the throttle body at a later date, as the warranty company may say it isn't broken anymore. I'm glad he carries one with him and that he managed to fix it on the drive. He ordered a replacement for his stock before he left - apparently it's not that uncommon a problem.
