You need to remove the tailgate interior trim panel to be able to unplug the connector.

Basically yes but there are a couple of screws behind the handle on the left hand lower edge of the tailgate that have to be removed.

I replaced a strut a few months ago. You need something to prop the tailgate open whilst you are changing the strut over, the single remaining strut will not hold the weight. It is also useful to have a second pair of hands to hold the trim in place whilst you are getting the clips lined up. Otherwise a straightforward job.
