USB phone charging

I have my phone in a vent-mounted cradle and cabled to the USB socket in the armrest cubby. Unsightly wiring I know, but I don't really care.
I play music via bluetooth.
So far, all good.
On a long journey I have noticed that the phone doesn't charge up and only barely keeps the charge it started off with.
Its nothing fancy, a MOTO E5.
Is there a way to get more power out of the USB? My charger at home puts out up to 2.1A, but some old ones I have kicking around are only good for 500mA.
Any suggestions? RRS HSE Dynamic SDV6 2014
