England 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Santorini Black
Buy or not to buy?

Gentlemen may I tap into your superior knowledge Please!

I went to look at a 2009 Range Rover Sport HSE with 91 thousand miles and fitted with the three litre deisel engine.

Apart from the price which was on the high side!

My main concern was with the engine running, I took off the oil filler cap and there was pressure and smoke coming out of the hole accompanied by a slopping noise of what I can only assume was the camshaft rotating with the sloshing of the oil!! My description of the sound is probably off but its a noise that my current sport with a 2.7 engine does not make!
My current sport has covered 130 thousand miles and when I take out the oil filler cap, there is no smoke, no pressure or camshaft noise!

My question is. Is that common on the 3 litre deisel engine or should I steer cleer?

Many thanks in advance.
Dennis

They are very similar engines.

So I would not expect a significant difference

Take it to a local reputable mechanic. Or better yet let your local Land Rover dealer thoroughly review it, time well spent. Have them print out the build sheet for you and service history - one hour labor is money well spent too. Vincit qui se vincit

Hi. I am a little late to the party here but i fully endorse GT RRS advice to have it fully checked out. When i purchased my 10 yr old 2011 RRS privately i arranged with the seller to meet me at the nearest Land Rover dealership (luckily quite close) and i paid for a full inspection which also gave me a chance to look under the car as well. I understand this may not always be possible due to distance and the seller not being receptive etc but it does not hurt to suggest especially if you do have a nagging doubt.

If the price is high like you stated and the engine is doing something that doesn't seem right compared to the one you have then just walk away.
It's a no brainer. There are plenty about.
Anyway. Get a V8 petrol, they don't rattle..
