replacing gps antenna - are they year specific?

HI I have trawled through a few years worth of comments etc on here (very very helpful site as a newbie ) but cannot find if anyone has established whether the shark fin gps antennas used are 'interchangeable'. - ie will one for a 2012/13 model work on 2007/8 model gps set up? I have tried to get an answer from LRJ and a couple of dealers but they just refer to the part number shown.... and since a few of our owners have used cheap gps units of e bay etc I am wondering why a later one will not work to replace mine with? any advice welcome please !

Is it the taller aerial or the lower shaped one? as I think you may need to check your original Aerial to see if it has short fly leads on the aerial that connect to the main harness fakra connectors, the later aerials connected direct to the main harness so I don't think it would be a straight swap without changing the fakra connectors on the main harness from female to male or finding some short after market fly leads that are male/female. I had a 09 plate pre-face lift RRS1 which had the smaller aerial and it is the same aerial as my MY13 so would probably work but not totally sure.

Cheers
Col

Thanks for your reply, I have had a look under the headlining there and it seems to have a couple of short leads coming from the shark fin fitting then has the connectors to the leads going presumably down to the dvd unit and radio etc.
Yes on looking again at the 2012 etc version antenna they don't have leads but fixed female connectors on the underside so suspect you're right that it would need my leads changing to male ones...probably not something I would want to undertake !
As the cheap gps module I got seems to work fine on the dash it may be I just live with that or try the other earlier posts to fix it under the shark fin.....

You could probably use a couple of these to convert to newer style aerial, universal will fit all colour fakra connectors.

Have been looking into adding a DAB aerial to the shark's fin on our 2006RRS and as a result I'm likely replace the Shark's Fin innards with the circuit board from an after market aerial that has DAB, FM & GPS on board - assuming it all fits of course

Whilst doing the background research into such a mod I found this thread whilst searching on the forum:

It might be helpful.
