Low fuel warning light issue

Hi, this is a weird one. I have just sold my 2010 RRS. It was collected tonight by the new buyer. I filled the car with diesel before he collected so it was definitely full when he set off. He has driven about 30 miles and the fuel empty light come on? Topped it up until the pump clicked off which was only a few quid so the car is now full. My question is why has the fuel warning light come on when the car was almost full? This has never happened during the 3 years I owned the car. TYPICAL!
Any advice would be appreciated?
Thanks

There are 2 fuel level sender gauges in the tank, the wiring fails and it gets confused thinking it's about to run out. It has the potential of the car thinking it needs to go into limp mode to prevent damage to the fuel pumps. It's very common unfortunately.
The cure is to drop the tank and repair the wiring/replace the senders. Nasty smelly job on your drive or pay for it to be done. I took the latter course and it was about £600 for new everything.
