1st/2nd gear

so ive noticed when am driving normally the car only ever goes down to 2nd gear. so if i stop at some lights itll set off in 2nd gear. that kinda steals all my torquey fun since i noticed if i manually shift to first i get that pin in your seats power am looking for.

is this due to fuel economy which is fine, or should i not be doing too many hard launches in 1st?

Using first gear in traffic is stressful with supercharged power

Would think if you moved the shifter over to sport, it would use 1st from traffic lights
You should feel it change when stationary

Mines the same. I had a BMW in the past which did the same too.

Stressfull for you.
A slight dab of the throttle in 1st gear and u could be in someone’s boot

You carry on. Try sport mode only

I know mines a TDV8 and so totally different power curve from yours but mine always seems to start in 2nd. What I don't know is whether any of the sensors realise that sometimes you are facing up hill and so select 1st. That'd be clever! Robin

ahh fair enough. i dont plan to do it in day to day traffic tbh. just sometimes launching off the line the car felt a bit meh and i was starting to wonder if id broken something. but knowing its in 2nd gear when i floor it in D explains that

Ours always pulls away in 1st. So does my X5 V8.
The range rover does shift from 1st to second fairly quickly tho.

Are you sure it always pulls away from standstill in 1st? How have you checked that? They are set up to use 2nd in normal driving using the gearbox in D. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

am actually curious if i can setup my gearbox in D to shift as soon as humanely possible Razz

since what people say to do for fuel economy is to stick it into manual and shift up as soon as it can and just allow the gearbox to shift down.
