When my engine went it was to the max in oil, but, I can’t confirm why it failed, just reported as metal bits in the oil, it would still run albeit roughly !

The engine oil, while acting as a lubricant, also acts as a coolant, taking heat away from the hot metal spinny bits, and transferring it elsewhere to the engine. The hotter the oil gets, the less lubrication it can provide

One if these areas the oil flows through is the (aptly named) oil cooler

This has galleries of engine oil and engine coolant. The coolant draws heat from the oil, and flows through the radiator, whereby, it looses that heat. The "cooled" oil (still 90+ degrees) continues its flow around the engine, lubricating things as it goes. And its a continual process

The less oil in the engine, the less heat transfer can take place, and the oil gets hotter and hotter until it provides less and less lubrication, and thats when engine wear and damage occurs...

At a capacity of less than 3 litres, thats less than half the recommended amount of oil

And thats before we get into the chemistry of engine oil degrading quicker as its being worked harder as there is less of it. Its all above my head anyway, TBH Laughing

Of all these engine failures, I wonder just how many still had a full 5.8 litres of oil in the sump...

This is good news to me at least who changes every 6 months and checks the oil every week.

Wonder if there's anyone on the forum with the proper amount at the time of failure? L494 3.0L SDV6 Autobiography in Chile Red (Current)

In all of the 3.0 engine failures I've seen through our doors, every single one, without exception has been low on oil at time of failure...

That's saying a lot. Why and how are these engines running low on oil?
Are there particular reasons?

Does your comment apply to the 2.7L or just 3.0L

As I posted in a previous topic:
https://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic61827.html

There are 7 versions of oil pumps through the life of the engine. What do Ford/PSA/JLR know that we don't, and what are they possibly hiding from us?

It takes a lot of financial and manpower resources to investigate the "not so obvious" causes of crankshaft failure. Resources us as individual owners, would not have access to.

I am of the opinion that they have already nailed the cause(s) of crankshaft failure, but are not telling us to avoid lawsuits or out of warranty claims. The failures are quickly seen to, so that the relevant owners do not take matters any further.

They might be selling us goods that are "not fit for purpose", items just waiting to blow up in our faces, and might "probably" know it.

LR time seem to think the failure of Fabians crank was a manufacturing defect ..

When I worked in the motor trade in Coventry I worked with a man who spent his time at the factory testing components that had been incorrectly heat treated to "see if they would last the warrantee period".
These were mainly gearbox parts.
However when asked how they got miss heat treated he told me that the workers often wanted a week off in term time to take the kids on a cheap holiday .that week there brother went in to do their job ...oh yes he was a milkman ! foreman and unions turned a blind eye.

Want a gearbox ..no problem .hang it on a rope around the workers neck.push through the gates with a gang of mates around pick it up at the pub...EPLS Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.
