RRS 2012 - Detachable Tow Hook Lock.

Although the RRS is a 2012, it appears the detachable tow hook is an older version.

The handle on the hook has no ratchet grooves on the inside. Which I think is the KNW500010 version.

Can the later version kit KNW500020 be fitted to the hook which has the ratchet on the inside.

The reason for asking: The key has snapped in the key/lock barrel so need to replace the handle and key lock.

thanks

I think you may actualy find the earlier one KNW500010 has been superseded to the later number KNW500020, a issue you may have is if Red plastic part of the ratchet is damaged this is not part of the new handle kit and not available separate from L/R or it never used to be, although it might be worth checking as it could be now.

This may help.

Thanks,

Couple of questions:

If I got both the new bits, will they replace the older bits with the screw holes etc in the hook.

Is the new handle with its ratchet in the handle and bit on the Hook, an added safety and securuty thing.

Thanks again RRS HSE SDV6 2012

Not totaly sure what you mean, but if you watch the Powerful video it should show you all the bits and how to change and assemble it, although it does go on a bit.

Thanks

I have seen the video awhile ago.

Basically will the new later bits replace the old bits.

And why has the KNW500020 superseded the KNW500010, better safety etc ????

thanks RRS HSE SDV6 2012

If a part has been superseded would really have though it would be a direct replacement for the superseded part, as to why have vague recollection it may have been something to do with the key, but would normally assume it is because it's a improved design, but in L/R's case probably cheaper to produce and charge more for it. However I believe they also changed the colour from black to green.

Ok thanks,

I have searched in every nook and cranny and cannot find why the later large handle version should be the one to use and why.

I have found out why JLR changed the design of the Detachable Tow Hooks for the Discovery/Range Rover Sport.

'The back side of the larger design having ratchet teeth moulded into it which prevents it rotating in operation before being pulled outwards first.

The earlier version allowed the knob to rotate under load without being pulled outwards at first and allowed the tang to withdraw from its receiver.'

But still dont know if the larger handle parts with the ratchet will replace the smaller version as a straight swop. RRS HSE SDV6 2012

Can confirm by finding both the later parts with ratchet of the Tow Hook.

The early version lock/handle can be replaced with the later version with the ratchet without any drilling etc. RRS HSE SDV6 2012

sportgoogle, thanks for posting your findings, I'm sure someone will benefit from this in future.

I have the newer type, but I cannot recall having to pull it out to be able to turn it. It looked pretty much unused when I bought the RRS and I do a bit of towing so I'd expect I'd have noticed (I'm away at work at the moment so unable to check). Has anyone found if the ratcheting parts wear easily, I'm just wondering if mine could be worn and needing replacement? 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

Haven't used mine for a while, but sure I have to pull it out and turn it to unlock and release it from the car, would possibly think if you didn't and just turn it that would cause wear on the plastic ratchet.

This is correct, I just purchased one for my new to me 2012 rr sport. I had to remove the red cover first and then pullout and twist the knob on the tow bar. The ratchet locks the pin in place and when you insert the towbar the small pin on the other side hits the car and this releases the ratchet. It wasn't going all the way home at first so I took a fine file and filed all the corrosion off the hole under the car, now it fits like a glove

The thing is, is to be sure you have the later version Tow Hook Locking handle.

To define which you have:- The larger is the later version

Never really worked out why the Red ratchet part is not part of the later kit and you can't buy it separate from L/R as would have thought if that is damaged your stuffed.

Generally use one of these from A/F as a precaution as the tow hook have been known to fall out.
