L494 Buyers Guide

Hi. Not been around here since I sold my 2007 TDV8 a number of years ago. I spent a lot of time on here before I bought that car and found everyone very helpful. Although it had a full LR service history, there was no mention of gearbox of diff oil changes, so I had this done within my first month of ownership. My daughter who is now 21, still give me grief about selling that RRS, she wasn't happy, neither was the wife.

Now I've got a 2017 Audi A8 Sport and the wife has a stupid Mini, but we have decided we don't need 2 cars any more and I'm not doing silly annual mileage either, therefore we are selling and looking to get a 2014/2015 RRS SDV6. I would only buy from an LR dealer, unless there were recommendations for a good specialist dealer. I certainly would not buy one without a full LR dealer service history.

I have had a good look around here but there is no buyers guide. I have bought a lot of cars in my time so I'm happy to look over things like bodywork, panel gaps, underneath damage, checking all electrical gadgets etc, etc. I have also ready stories on here about crank shaft issues.

I would be very grateful for the benefit of your experience to know what are the common things to go wrong, expensive things to go wrong, optional extras to avoid and any preventative maintenance items that should be considered.

I really wouldn’t get hung up on dealer FSH, indys can be far better and at least some can fill in the on line service history, so make sure it has FSH by dealer or reputable Indy.

Make sure you get a warranty, WD are as good as any, to cover the crankshaft, they can go at any time regardless of servicing.

The oil level sensor can play up, never heard of it on Disco 4 but on RRS it seems fairly common for some reason, £70 part but lots of labour.

You definitely need the glass roof. Thumbs Up Joined the X5 45e club

Hi mate, I'v just ran a 2013 RRS L494 for a year I did 7k miles without any issues I did it without a warranty in place, but it was always on my mind about potential issues especially the crank shaft ......I eventually traded it in and have left the brand for a while, but can see myself going back one day, and yes next time I shall run it with a warranty

I purchased mine from Saxton 4 x4 and had a terrible experience with them, lots of hassle, for example, they had put cheap budget tyres on the front, which they eventually agreed to replace with premium brands, if I agreed to remove some negative feed back I had left for them, also they had disguised the smell of cigarette smoke with one of those air conditioning bombs, just before it arrived round the front of there building for a test drive, little things like this put me off them, also some service history they promised they were waiting to arrive from the original owner and send on to me never arrived......all in all a bad experience they lie to your face and after sales is terrible. I wouldn't go there to look for one full stop

Thanks guys. I had a Warranty Wise warranty on my last RRS, but never needed you use it. When looking I did bounce WW and WD off against each other. They both kept calling me every couple of days, reducing their price until it came down to £615.

I have read a lot of reports on Saxton's both good and bad. Unfortunately the bad one seem really bad.

I really think that with premium brand cars the dealers know that the vast majority of their demographic knows nothing about cars and will accept any crap the dealers spout. I could go on for ages about the rubbish I get when my Audi A8 goes in for a service. I eventually complained loudly in the dealership one day that they were trying to mis-sell service items. Strangely the service manager took me to his office, offered a gesture of goodwill and never ripped me off again Current - 2020 Range Rover Sport P400e

dont think I would buy a 6 year old car from a main stealer, rather go private/forum for a car still in use and agree above some idp give better service and do more in a service

your question has been raised before (not a buyers guide) but heres one thread.

Back in the day, I'd have wanted a full LR dealer history. Now I know better, I'd be worried as a turkey on the 24th December if all there was were LR dealer stamps in the book.

I'd rather buy from a decent LR indy. You get the protection of the law by buying from a car-selling company and they're likely to be able to fix it if anything does go wrong rather than trying to bodge it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
