Fun Tuesday Outing at Tierkloof 4x4

Since today was a public holiday in ZA, couple of friends & I went to a nearby trail for some fun off-roading at Tierkloof 4x4, a trail just outside Cape Town: https://www.tierkloof4x4.com

They were in Defenders and I was able to keep up (with some rock-packing and spotter guidance). This is a fairly technical trail, and a few people on our local LR WhatsApp group were very surprised that I completed the whole trail!

The 90 has massive MT tyres and front & rear ARB lockers, the 110 is standard with regular MTs.

I would rate the trail a 4 in the dry, and 5+ in the wet. Thankfully it had stopped raining a few days ago, so the trail was damp but not wet/muddy.

Here are some photos, the YouTube video will be up tomorrow.

Looks lovely!

Always good to see a "drug dealer's / footballer's car" getting down and dirty with the knobbly tyre brigade. They're always surprised how well you can go on the off road equivalent of racing slicks. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

It was loads of fun, and a good workout too - packing rocks, running up & down the hills, etc. Mr. Green

I'm still on the 255/55R20 road tyres that came with the car, Goodyear Eagle F1s.

Yes, plenty of people here were very surprised that I took an RRS to this trail AND completed the whole trail. You will see why when I've uploaded the video to YouTube Whistle --

That's very cool. It's remarkable what these vehicles can do on standard road tyres.

I'm looking forward to your YouTube video Thumbs Up Kev

Great videos, naks! Thanks for sharing Thumbs Up

The tricky bit where you had to move rocks is mighty impressive to watch and the scenery is stunning.

It's inspired me to get out and about a bit more... Kev

Nice trail, looked fun with some great scenery - although you do have to remind yourself to look at it rather than just the track sometimes.

The video did show one of my bugbears - Defenders with big knobbly tyres on using the "keep the wheels spinning and eventually you'll dig down to firm ground" technique. Great, but no one else can then get through because you've dug out big holes just where no one else needs them.

The relative lack of wheel spin from the RRS shows how good the traction control is. Especially on pure road tyres. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

@RRSTDV8 to be honest, that chap has had the most terrible luck with the TC in both his two 110s (this is his second one).

Every time we go off-road, he always struggles with the TC, and even when other people drive it, the TC just doesn't kick in as well or as early as it does on others' cars.

Maybe it's to do with the 2.2 vs the 2.4? I don't know, but we've tried all sorts of tests and lines, and he's always struggling, so in the end he gave up fighting with LR and just drives it Confused --

Wow! Amazing video, thanks for sharing.

Looks like a lot of fun and great to see what the RRS is capable of especially on standard road tyres!

Hats off to you sir! Bow down 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?

The short version is good. The sand run looked fun! Cool

The rock "ditch" where rock moving was needed, I wonder if a different approach might have helped. Just mulling, of course, but sometimes you can make the angle less by approaching at a shallower angle - starting slightly more parallel to the step allows you to turn the front tyre up on to it before the nose gets in the way. Then you can turn up the slope to do the normal line. It's always difficult to appreciate the exact lie of the ground on a video, of course, so this might have been impossible. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
