Noisey ACE pump

Hi everyone,

I've been through the ringer a little and I'm hoping someone can point me to a possible solution.

My 06 RRS SC currently sounds like a BMW half series (new Mini) and it's doing my fruit. The cause of the whine has been tracked to the ACE pump.
I've tried quite a few bits already, I bought a brand new valve block (was very cheap on eBay), bought a new reservoir and also tried swapping out the pump for one I bought from a breakers yard. The system has been flushed/bled and a new filter fitted in the valve block.

After all that it's still whining, one thing with swapping out the pump for a different one is that the sound is DEFFINATELY coming from the pump as the pitch/volume of the whine has changed since swapping them over.

Now there is every possibility that the pump I bought from the breakers yard isn't right but these pump's hardly ever fail, I've had it suggested that it may be the insulation on the pipe mounts has corroded and is causing the noise to feed back through the chassis etc.

Now before I go and spend £900 on a new pump has anyone got any other ideas ?

Hi did you ever find the cause of the noisy ace Pump?
I know this is an old post but my car has same fault and I have also changed everything except the reservoir.

No, I replaced the entire system bar the actual sway bar actuators. I’ve now come to live with it 😂

Thank you for your speedy response.
Looks like I am in for an interesting time, mine is so noisy I am now considering changing the ace fluid to a higher viscosity, I know many say only use the correct fluid but have to do something radical.

Hi its very noisy above 1000rpm it emanates from the ACE.Pump new one fitted slightly better at first but now exactly the same.
Just like Socasts issue who has also changed everything except the active role bars. Hoping fluid change and full bleed of the system may help otherwise will have to turn up the volume on the Showaddywaddy cds

yes sadly
as part of the major refurb;
Supercharger refurbished
new water pump
all idler and tensioners replaced
new alternator
new belts
even new viscous fan bearing
engine is smooth and quiet.
Used stethoscope for identification. Pipework is quiet.
Alway happy to receive any ideas / views, thanks for your interest. As you say it is a simple system but reading on the web and other forums its seems to be an issue no one has fully resolved - yet. This car previously belonged to my son and he had all LR dealer service and repairs including this noise - eventually they claimed its ’Normal’!!!!!
Lovely car though.

Does the sound change if you take the cap off the reservoir? The system is so simple that at rest, the pump just pushes fluid to the valve block and it’s then returned to the reservoir and back to the pump. Can you see the fluid returning to the reservoir at idle?

I can say that (touch wood) my system doesn’t make any noise and I have a healthy return at idle. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Have checked today, the sound does not change with the cap off and there is a healthy flow of fluid.
I have taken off the reservoir and fluid easily flows from the inlet and outlet so no blockage on the internal filter.
Removed valve block filter and I was expecting the fluid in the pipes and the reservoir to drain but less than an egg cup of ACE fluid flowed,
Do you or anyone know if there is solenoid valve that opens the primary circuit?
Thank you both for your ideas.

Hi there. I had my front ACE pipes replaced on my59 2010 shape RRS and ever since then I’m getting a noise from under the driver’s side foot-well when cornering it’s like a metal on metal sound which I thought was coming from the wheel but it has been looked at by my indie & had the front wheels & brakes apart tried a new Wheel bearing but still doing it. I was told that it could be coming from the ace as it sounds like fluid in Pipes kind of noise which now makes sense as it started just after the ACE pipes was changed, I had to have the car back as it in for an mot tomorrow & the indie had to carry on with there other customers, it’s booked back in on Thursday, any ideas what it could be would be much appreciated ðŸ‘ðŸ»

Check the rubber mounts are 1, present and 2, intact. There should be 2 on the pipes behind the wheel And one clamp near the front body mount under the drivers side. If the fitter re-used the original mounts, there’s a good chance they were goosed when he removed them. If they are good, check the valve block mounts are good and that the pipes are not touching the body or chassis. There’s at least 4 or 5 different front ace pipes so have they fitted the correct version? 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)
