ENGINE FAULT displayed

2006 Sport. Driving across the Pyrenees yesterday, going up one of the 'hilly bits' I received a message on the Dash......ENGINE FAULT plus a picture of an OPEN BOOK. I know there are codes that are logged on the computer and can be looked on a service but is the BOOK sign trying to tell me the problem is something simple that is referred to in the Manual i.e. low oil or coolant level !?! Andrew Kennedy

Thanks for comment! If not enough air, let's assume air, can you suggest how or what I look at to rectify the fault? One other symptom it might possible be if turbo related is that around 3500 revs the engine power surges!? Andrew Kennedy
