RRS turbo warranty and missed crucial modification | |
Hi all, advice required and suggestions for taking this further.
I have a RRS 2010 plate. Purchased the car at two years of age with 13,000 miles on the clock
In 2017, i had a new turbo replaced at a cost of £3500 by a london dealership. At the time of renewal, the car had done 72,000 miles. Turbo blowing oil is the best of the description for the reason of failure.
In 2018, the turbo was leaking oil again, so booked it in to a Manchester dealer. The car here had done 9,000 miles since the renewal i had done in london. They carried out a diagnostics who confirmed that the new turbo fitted the previous year had failed again. This was replaced under warranty, at no cost to myself.
Dec 2019, put car in for a service at an independant LR specialist, where the garage called me to say that there was an oil leak from the turbo which needs looking at urgently, as only 3 x ltrs of oil was drained from the engine. The exaust was full of oil where the oil was being blown back into the turbo. Annoying to say, the same turbo. The car had done 11,000 miles since the Manchester turbo change. No indication how long it had been leaking oil but suggested for a long time due to the amount of oil lost and soaked into the exaust. I immediately called LR customer care to report this so make sure that any claim/fault is at least registered to fight them on it if need be.
Jan 2020. Car is checked over by a different LR garage in London who carried out diagnostics who reported back that it is not the turbo that has failed but the oil return pipe from the turbo to the engine has not been changed to a bigger gauge as a modification was released due to oil not fully flowing back into the engine but being blown back into the exaust hence the oil leaking through the exaust.
My issues here is that:
When i had the first and second turbos replaced, had the turbos really failed or was it simply this pipe was not picked up as being the problem? When a turbo is replaced, it is listed from LR, what i believe as a kit of all necessary parts for that replacement, which should be including the necessary modification of the oil return pipe. The modified pipe was not installed by either garage, as i have both invoices from both garages.
When a fault occurs on a car, is that put into the system for all possible causes to be investigated by the workshop that advices on what to look for, cause and recommended changes/renewals, as this overflow pipe would have been listed a possible issue hence the modification.
If the First renewal in the london dealership didnt pick this up, then at least the second change in Manchester should have.
When a part is changed under warranty, is that part investigated to discover why it had failed? In LR's interest i would have thought it would have.
To have this oil return pipe changed now, is going to cost me £1100.00. The pipe is £48 an dthe rest is labour to fit and clean.
LR have rejected the claim under warranty. LR has offered to cover the cost of the parts if i cover the labour. Generous of them! Is that a indication of guilty?
So if the either of the turbos has not failed, i have paid a hefty price for a replacement oil return price that costs £48 which should have been picked up by at least the warranty replacement in Manchester.
I need my car back ASAP so have agreed with the garage to pay for this and to make any claims against landrover after i get the car back.
Any advice on my next actions would be appreciated.
