Strange - studs are almost always used as an upgrade vs bolts when building high performance engines; they allow a much higher clamping force as the stud is only deformed along one axis (length), while a bolt has to be deformed along two axes (stretched along its length and twisted around its core) to provide the same clamping force..

The problem here is that they are too long. The head of the bolts are just protruding past the surface where the sump mates up, like this.
