Tow bars

What tow bar does everyone have fitted and do some still use the original detachable tow bar?
We recently purchased a 2010 RRS HSE it has twin 7 pin electrics which we need to change to 13 pin, the tow bar looks like it has never been used.We go away in two weeks towing a 1800kg caravan and the tow hook just won't fit into the receiver. We have filed it and made sure the receiver is clean but it still won't fit.
If we do change it we would prefer a detachable,is there any out there for the 2010?

Are you sure its the correct receiver they are know to have issues like the tow ball falling out whilst towing as happened to me and i would not put the van on the back with a tow bar that had been filed.Firstly search on here for tow ball issues i wold either buy a plate to bolt to the detachable tow bar fixing or get a fixed tow bar Thumbs Up

Hi Geoffsnook thank you for the reply, yes have seen and heard about the Landover towbars failing for some years now, though wasn't sure if something had changed in the mean time.
We are going to get a new towbar but would prefer a detachable though not having much look finding one,for a 20011 yes but not a 2010,I'm not sure what changed in that year if anything.
Regarding the one we have now the shape of the tow ball and receiver are the same it just won't fit in for some reason, we're not going to take the chance with it even if it did fit now.
Sorry you were one of the ones to suffer one of the failures, must of been quite frightening.

I have a Trust TL1 on mine, was quite reasonably priced and I fitted it myself. It is fixed, though less obtrusive than the factory fixed unit and doesn't affect ground clearance as much.

Tow Trust bar here too. DIY fitment. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I have used the factory fitted detachable tow hitches on four Range Rovers now and had had them on other vehicles without any problems! My caravan weighs in at 2000kg and I have towed cars on a twin axle trailer also. Hope you get sorted out though.. Thumbs Up Current: 2010 RRS 3.6 TDV8 HSE

What part isn’t fitting? Is it the catch not locking in? Looking at topix, there’s no difference between 2010 and 11. There is a minor diff between 2005 to 9 and 10 to 13 but that’s it.

Can you post a photo of what you have and the lock assembly. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Hi,
we have had 2xD3 and 3xRRS from 2005-2010 and used removable ones on all of them with no issues, its horses for courses we tintent a few times a year, not a horse box on every weekend Thumbs Up

as said ^ minor difference which from memory is the red locking ring as there are 2 types of replacement locks ISTR

someone could have tried to "clean it" internally and not got it back together correctly Question does the pin withdraw fully

as mentioned pics can help

Thumbs Up

oh and regarding the electrics why not get a £5 converter plug Question Porsche Cayenne 2022

Thank you both.
Maybe a bit of a stupid question, Pufftmw does the original towbar stay on for the other towbar to attach to?
Thanks geoffsnook I have seen someone mention it on here, shame he doesn't sell them anymore though.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
Its the tow hook not fitting into the receiver,it just won't go in far enough for the pin to come out.
We have had a D3 before and towed a twinaxle with no problems with factory fitted towbar for a few years with no issues at all so can't understand why this just won't fit properly,it as if the receiver is to small or the tow ball to big,yet no rust, dirt or anything else in there, the tow ball looked brand new and never been used.We did think maybe it was a different towbar that had been attached though everything looks the same for the tow ball to fit in,the noggins on the side and shape.
OH was filing the tow ball slightly in the hope it would fit, unfortunately he seemed to of got carried away filing a bit more each time and filed way more than he should of done 🙈 the pin would come out in the end but not fully still,so any pressure/ force on the ball it would come out,so we definitely won't be using that one now 😂

Not sure I understand the question but the TL1 has a part that fits into the receiver for LR removable towbar (it clicks in). Then there are a couple of bolts that attach to the chassis & that is essentially it.

I used the removable one for a while and it was fine but I do a lot of towing over many miles, so decided to get the extra security of the fixed.

Hi,
may be a bit late now if its that loose Shocked Shocked

have you tried pushing the little pin in while NOT in the RRS to see if the large pin comes out ok Question
just watch fingers and control it with the lock handle as it has some force behind it when the small locking pin is depressed
if in doubt dont do it Whistle

Thanks everyone.
The tow ball just wouldn't go high enough for the pin to come out,on its own pressing the little silver pin the lock would come out fine.
Pictures of the receiver, not sure i dare post pictures of the tow ball Embarassed
