Mileage

Mate of mine is buying a low mileage RRS TD and wants to know if he has a vehicle check done either by RAC or simlar or even a Dealer, can they hook it up to a computer and verify that the mileage is correct as he is concerned about how easy the digital mileage can be docterd.

I personally think they can

The mileage should tally up with the mileage recorded at any service intervals the car has already had. I can't imagine the car will have done SO many miles that it would be subject to tampering anyway... ? Digital odos are much more tamperproof than the older analog types - so it's down to risk I suppose. Check the usual things:

- do tyres look like they've done the apparent mileage? If new, check any receipts for when they were replaced.
- do interior cues (pedals, top of gear selector etc) display the appropriate amount of wear?

Personally, given the RRS is still such a new car (there aren't any 2 yr old RRSs on the roads just yet, that I know of), the likelihood of a tampered odo is very slim I would've said....

The car has done 12k, but certain things don't add up, like it's had 2 sets of tyres.

It hasn't had the first service either

So I think he is worried it could have done more miles, then put back to show less miles and not show up on any service record, it also has a fair few chips.

OK.

It's not due it's first service until 15k (assuming this is in the UK) so nothing to worry about on that point, on it's own.

When you say two sets of tyres, does that include the set from the factory? I'd replaced all my tyres twice by 17k. The RRS does seem to wear tyres out very quickly... some quicker than others, dependent on the type of tyre. Could well be that the alignment is out (a oft-reported issue on earlier RRSs) - that will wear tyres prematurely too.

It could quite feasibly have been very well used both on and offroad. This could also account for the second set of tyres too....

If your mate is worried, I'd get him to have the dealer do the appropriate investigation - what does the dealer say about all this anyway? What price is it up for?

I think it's up at 40k, I've told him to walk away if he has any doubt as there are a fair few out there for sale, maybe go to a dealer if he isn't happy parting with that sort of money private.

Plenty at dealers for around that price and a lot more peace of mind, plus have a good haggle with a dealer as sales are slow at the moment and supply is plentiful.

I think things like tyre wear are down to driver style more than anything.

I have a Supercharged and I don't drive it like a granny, but the tyres are still going strong at nearly 29,000 miles. The shoulders are worn but the main tread is still about 4.5mm.

Also, my interior looks spotless and you'd struggle to tell it had done so many miles. L319 D4 HSE
