MY19 Front Brakes

Hi guys - walked past a MY19 68 plate SDV6 Dynamic yesterday and noticed that the front brakes look considerably smaller (both discs and calipers) than the Brembo ones on my 14 SDV6 AB. Photo attached.

Have LR stopped using Brembo for the latest version on the RRS?

Yes they have & are no longer an option or standard. Having just changed mine to a 2019 without Brembos, from my last one with Brembos I think the 2019 don't perform so well. This could of course be my imagination, as I'm sure LR wouldn't decrease braking efficiency. current 2015 hse dynamic, grey.

Thanks PKO - very interesting.

I suspect it will be sold as "weight-saving" and improving handling via lower un-sprung weight but in reality it will be cost-saving as the Brembo hardware is famously expensive.

IIRC from my TDv8 owning days I asked why later versions of the car had no Brembo insignia on the calipers yet still had Brembo brakes and was told that if LR put the Brembo logo on they also had to pay a royalty to Brembo, seems an inprobable tale but stranger things happen in the car making world....... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim - I can understand that (certainly true on my Boxster S which has Brembo brakes with no Brembo logo on) but I don't think the new RRS MY19 brakes are Brembo - they look completely different...

Will be interesting to hear the official line/justification. Am 90% sure it will be cost-cutting.

The brakes are definitely less effective than the previous model (pre MY18). The previous brakes were notorious for developing major squealing and squeaking and I had mine replaced at least three times under warranty only for the problem to rise it's ugly head yet again! I have now had my MY18 for 6 months and done 6000 miles and there has been no squeak from the brakes at all.

This leads me to think JLR stopped using the Brembo units for this reason. What is interesting is that the PHeV still comes with the bigger brakes so it would be interesting to see how those are fairing and whether any owners have experienced the brake squeal issue...

Hi RRSman, glad it's not my imagination re braking efficiency. My previous 3 rrs have had Brembos, but I never experienced any problems or squealing from them. It's a shame that they're no longer standard fitting or an optional extra. current 2015 hse dynamic, grey.

I agree, it does seem to be cost cutting on JLRs part but I do wonder if the number of brake squeal warranty claims led them to take this action..

They don't look the same with those silly little calipers Censored

Range Rover is a high end brand and cost cutting like this is the start of a downfall in my opinion !!! My van has bigger calipers then those on the MY18 sport Rolling Eyes

Where else do they want to keep cutting corners, the price of them seems to jump everytime time a facelift or a new model comes out so it's just Landrover trying to make more money Censored

I have had three sports with Brembo's and never had any issues the brembo brakes are amazing Thumbs Up

Squeaking brakes has nothing to do with efficiency, Land rover figured that as most buyers of the brand purchased for the badge there was no need to bother about function. As we now see stopping power vs Squeak for me I'd take squeak any day to stop before hitting an object. Squeak can be cured by fitting ECB Red Stuff pads which also work better and leave less dust. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

Have a good read of this. It is about function not pose, I know most Range Rover Buyers aquire the vehicle for pose but some of us buy for function!

According to the brochure, the front brakes on the SDV6 are now 349mm, instead of previous 380mm. So, you can now fit a 19in wheel - no cost option in the configurator - should you want a bit more sidewall. (not that there are a lot of choices out there for 19in tyres) MY15.5 SDV6 HSE Dynamic without the H . Yulong White

I run 20 inch wheels on mine, and I think by the looks you would get 19 inch on with the big Red Brakes. In any case I really like the Red Brakes with EBC Red Stuff Pads. No squeal no Dust and better stopping. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.
