I accidentally caught the wheel arch trim yesterday and found a lot of dirt and sand trapped. I suspect it is not from normal road driving, although if not checked regularly it could build up. Next job check behind the sill trim, I suspect there's more.

That is quite a lot of mud for the age.

You really need to get into the wheel arch though.

I recently did my front brake pad wear sensor and had to take the lining out to get at the connector - I was surprised at the amount of dirt behind it in the guard - there were also a lot of recently dropped leaves in there from the trees in my front yard so I took it from that most of the dirt is decayed leaves that have come in through the top of the guard and then worked their way down to the bottom of the guard over the years - there did not seem to much in the way of dirt being kicked up from the wheels. - It would be hard to get in from that low with an in place liner anyway.

After 11 years of age I managed to get about 1 litre of dirt by volume out so not a lot really but If I lived in Northern Climates I would be worried about rust in the guard.

I took my front bumper off a few weeks back (another PITA as the bottom 4 bolts sheared off) in front of the radiator and up in between the radiator and other matrix’s I found more leaves and 2 German/Dutch crisp packets which never caused any issues but I spent a lot of time clearing it out. If the car was in Germany for some time it also may explain why my car is missing an MOT on the history page of DVLA.

I’m actually thinking of putting my car on axle stands and taking all the attached trims and bumpers off to redo the chassis with some protection. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)
