Exhaust crossover pipe

My daughter has had a leak diagnosed in the exhaust crossover pipe in her 2011 3.0 SDV6 . The price quoted for replacement is over £900 plus vat. Has anyone had any experience of this? The car has LR extended warranty but they are reluctant to cover this as it is classed as part of the exhaust system.
Again has anyone experienced warranty claims for this item. In my view the item is part of the exhaust manifold rather than the exhaust system.

Any thoughts welcome!

Even if the warranty wont cover it, I’m sure an exhaust shop can fix it or make a stainless one. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

I believe that a new one is about £600, and is a right pig to fit. They fail at the "flexible" bit, a cause of which can be when disturbed (e.g transmission work) the mechanic doesn't always re-fasten the supporting bolts on top. Has your daughter had any work done in that area?
Does the quote involve dropping the gearbox? That could account for the cost. Loads of info on Disco3 Thumbs Up
The used one that Brit Plumber found looks like a billy bargain, if you can find a garage that will fit parts you supply yourself,

A quick Google suggests it's not £600 for the pipe - unless you're buying from LR themselves. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for the feedback guys.

The price quoted by an Indie for the work is £930 inc vat of which the pipe is charged at £339 plus vat. The dealer has quoted £950 plus vat.

The local 'helpful' LR dealer said they would need the car in for two days to investigate the pipe and discuss the findings with the warranty company. When asked who pays for this investigation they were vague and suggested it could be reclaimed from the warranty company. They were told this was not acceptable as there was no cost limit to this investigation they eventually responded that it would cost in the region of £250. We asked to speak to the service manager to get some clarification, eventually a receptionist came back and said the repair would not be covered under extended warranty.

The service manager has always been too busy to discuss the issue and all conversations have been through a receptionist who has only been at the dealership a few days. They rarely return phone calls as they are always too busy!

It would appear that my daughter could well have followed the investigation route and been charged for that work and then been told this was not covered and subsequently had to pay for the repair on top of the investigation work. Surely a main LR dealer would understand the warranty?

Our view is that this pipe forms part of the manifold system not the exhaust system and should be covered by the LR extended warranty or is this yet another item that is not covered. We are escalating this complaint but I do not hold out much hope.

Has anyone had any experience of warranty claims for this item? It appears to be a known defect and is a significant potential cost item which one assumes should be covered by warranty.

For information I have purchased six LR Sports over the years from this dealership.

Thanks

Fair enough, I was basing it in this;

Further to some of the points raised the vehicle has not had any work carried out on the gearbox and I do not believe the plan is to lower it for the pipe change.

I am afraid there is no choice of local dealership if we want to stay with the brand.

I want to clarify the positioning of the crossover pipe. From the drawings it looks as though it is a pipe fitting between the two exhaust manifolds before the turbos. Is this correct? If so it does not form part of the exhaust system in the conventional sense. I assume a problem with the exhaust manifold or turbo would be covered by LR extended warranty so my argument is that this pipe should also be covered as it fits between the two.

Let me know if you believe my thinking is correct.

Thanks

I’m not 100% sure but I think it’s before the turbos so that both banks of the engine power the turbo not just the one bank (or is the V6 a twin turbo?)

Here’s a photo showing the x over pipe and a turbo on the left.

Thanks for the picture. It confirms my thoughts that this is supplied as part of the engine assembly.

LR warranty are still insisting this is not covered under the extended warranty. We are not prepared to accept this as it seems that anything that is attempted to be claimed through the warranty is not covered.

An item such as this which an Indie has informed us is a safety issue due to the potential release of CO into the passenger cabin should be covered as it should not fail at 80,000 miles.

It is unlikely I will be replacing my L420 Autobiography with another LR product as this has been my most unreliable vehicle to date and my daughter is currently looking at other brands as the cost of ownership is too high.

Out of interest has anyone had better support form other warranty companies or are they all as bad as the LR product?

Thanks

Hi Mac
Did you get resolution on your complaint, did you get it covered under extended warranty in the end?

No we did not get anywhere so she is seeking it and moving on to a VW Tiguan. Likewise I have had so many issues with my 2017 Autobiography I have placed a deposit on Porsche Cayenne.

It is such a shame to move away from the sport after having owned six of them but I cannot carry on with the frustrations of unreliability and poor backup.
