You likely have dirt on the CD pick up lens.

Well, took the stereo unit out and cleaned the lens unit which to be fair was clean, put it all back together and refitted.

If it was all clean inside, not just the lens and pickup, but I’m guessing you could also see the transport was clean too, then the likely outcome is a faulty unit. Could be time to bite the bullet and buy another one. |

It looked clean, nothing obvious, its almost as if the wrong type of cd like a playstation etc disc has been inserted to give the invalid disc message
