If it is an appreciable deepening of the exhaust note, it will be the EGR valve doing it's thing. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Thanks, Wilf. I'm not sure if it's exhaust note, sounds more like a compressor kicking in. Like an 'extra' noise ontop of the engine noise. |

rumble or dull knocking? - at low engine speed can be main bearings but that usually also happens under load as well at low engine speed.

It's def a rumble, like a compressor rattling away. Not a knock or pink thats for sure.

I had a funny noise from mine recently - more like the bass on a stereo was turned up full, or a slightly blowing exhaust, than a rumble. Turns out the serpentine belt was loose because one of the pulleys was angled. This came to light when the belt fell off completely and the alternator stopped working (battery light lit up, then lots of other lights). A bolt had sheared. A 10 part but the engine needs to come out to replace it. RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

Aha. So it turns out this was the exhaust blowing, but not the main pipe. Apparently there’s a smaller secondary pipe by the dpf, which on mine was cracked. The pipe opens up after about 5mins on idle when the egr kicks in. |
