Hi all,

As some of you will have seen in my other posts I am currently looking for a new (to me) car and I am considering a used RRS (what ever £10K can get me). Having looked around this site for a while and read the responses to my post I am seriously wondering why any of you still own a RRS. There seems to be nothing but stories of woe. I appreciate that most of the time people take to forums to resolve issues so what I am seeing is going to be biased toward the negative.

But surely there must be some folks out there that have bought an RRS with no major issues. Otherwise why are there still so many on the road and at such high prices.?

Iv'e only had my 2010 RRS for about 8 months, during which time its had to have an EPB module (paid for by warranty).
I did however have a D3 for 6 yrs and it was brilliant. Cost me one front wheel bearing, one brake caliper, set of tyres , a battery, and routine servicing.
I am hoping the RRS will be as good.
The reason we buy them is because every time we sit in them we get the permagrin.

Drive one of the competitors then drive a D3/RRS then you’ll know why. Also if you check out the other owner forums they have there problems as well and can be just as expensive to repair.
Also when your out on the roads just count how many moe L/R products are on the road to all the rest.. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

I have a 2005 4.2 SC with 116,000 miles which I've owned for nearly 2 years (109,000 miles when I bought it).

Although it is expensive to run I would say it's been pretty reliable with nothing that had to be done other than a new battery.

One possible advantage of buying an older car is that any issues will hopefully have been fixed by the previous owners so always ask for any paperwork if they claim work has been done.

The things I did get done were expensive but not because of reliability (new BCM at £2,500 because I did something stupid and last service was recommended to have both belts and all spark plugs changed which was £600).

There is also a very slight weep on the transmission seal but not enough to even leave a drop of fluid on the road and that will cost about £1,000 to have done but there is no rush.

I also read the horror stories every day and live with the constant fear of "what if?" in the back of mind but I do love the car. It is the price you pay for owning such a beast. The driving comfort is the best, the cabin sublime, the road presence awesome and the grin on my face huge!

I did look at a few before I bought mine and there was a big difference in condition and care for the same price. I ended up going from London to Newcastle to get one with full service history and extremely well looked after from a trader and I'm glad that I did.

My only advice to you is shop around, don't scratch that itch just because you want to. Take your time and find the right one and hopefully you'll have many years of trouble free driving in a car that you love to drive in!!

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?

The majority are probably trouble free apart from the obvious wear & tear parts. Forums are mainly there for advice on problems or moans about their cars needing fixed . Lets face it if people wrote in saying "my cars fine", there is no story

This pretty much what I am beggining to think is the case with the RRS. I think the RX8 forum is one of the few where its predominantly positive that you read (but us RX8 owners are mental anyway!!).

Really fancy an RRS as our next car but this place is starting to put me right off!!

I have had a pretty good time with mine and not spent a fortune spent a few quid buy not mad it has had a condenser a aux pump and a hose new plugs and coils so i think its pretty good and it still makes me smile when i put my foot down oh and mine also runs on gas if i want to

Yes 3 times over - in May 2005 I took delivery of a new 2.7TDv6 SE - one of the first RRS’s on the roads, in late 2007 a TDv8 HSE and then in 2015 an SDv6 HSE. I had no breakdowns or components failures in owning each for three years all three cars were purchased new and run to between 23000 and 36000. I also never had to replace a tyre due to wear, on the TDv8 I had to replace 2 nears side tyres and wheels when they were shredded/smashed when I was force off the road by a lunatic motorcyclist trying to prove that he was indestructible - he wasn’t but at least her lived to see another day! Out of 11 Land Rover products I have only owned one, a 2014 RR Evoque that was unreliable. The most reliable has been my 1996 Defender TDi 300, now 22 years old and nothing mechanical has ever failed on it however I did break the transfer gearbox ........ enjoying an off-road driving day too much but I was still able to drive 100 miles on it with no oil in it to get it to the specialist who fixes it. Annual running cost for that run at less than £200 for servicing annually, but it does only do 1200-1800. Iles a year, 90% that off road. In 2011 I also had to replace the chassis due to severe corrosion which was a well known problem with that particular year.
BTW all of my Sports were also regularly taken offroad over the hills and I used the cars how they were meant to be used and never as a commuter bus/ school run car in fact none of them were driven much in town, mostly on motorways at high speed or locally on A roads.
My 2 Discoveries and 2 L322 FFRR’s were also 100% reliable - only one light bulb failure between them in 4 years ownership and my 1st Evoque was also a good reliable car. I miss them all but think that JLR asks too much for too little and doubt I will be back to buy another. I noticed in this month’s What Car Land Rover has fallen further down the reliability list............ to the bottom. Last year only Tesla was below it, now Tesla has moved a few places up the list.
One problem I have noticed is that people buying elderly used Land Rovers and Range Rovers that maybe they consider vastly expensive at 100,000miles and £15000 forget that cars costing £60,000 to £100,000 new still gave the running costs of a £60,000 car when they are 10,20,30 years old and many of their costly electronic components now are hugely expensive to replace because they are often no longer made and have to be made especially. Another problem is too many owners of older Land Rover products don’t use them properly (like operating the transfer box monthly or running the climate control all the time) or Service them properly, they continually ignore serious issues or take the car to the garage under the arches who are more used to servicing crappy Audi’s and BMW’s and who know nothing about the complexity of a Land Rover product, then they complain like mad when something expensive fails.
Never buy any Land Rover product if you want cheap motoring, if you look after them properly they will be great BUT you must be prepared for some huge bills, it happens that things do go wrong and fail on a old car and many RRS being asked about here are old cars, often purchased cheaply and needing big money spent on them because they have been neglected by owners previously.
Nobody buying a Ferrari would dream of taking it to the local Fiat dealer for servicing, why do it for a nearly as expensive Range Rover? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I had a TDV8 that went to 174,000miles when I sold it. Sold it in the village and it's still going. I spent far too many beer tokens on it but it was worth it. Fabulous thing (when it wasn't occasionally being infuriating) and I regret selling it.

I found that using LR's dealer network is the best way to keep the vehicle unreliable and poorly serviced. Find one that has been looked after by a decent indie and then keep using a decent indie. That will help and when things do go wrong the bills will be cheaper too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I Have had mine for over 5 years from new.
No problems or breakdowns except when a squirrel chewed an height sensor cable.
Always a pleasure to drive, best car that I have owned and I have had a few.
Perhaps I have been lucky, I always warm the engine prior to setting off and let the turbo spool down when the journey has completed.
Serviced by an Indie according to the service schedule.
As with all forums the majority of topics are about the problems.
I have had more problems with Audi and Mercs.

Glad to see some positive stories then. The hunt continues for the diamond in the rough. Problem is where I am based there not many to pock from so gonna have to be a long journey which means you have to be pretty sire you want it. Not gonna travel 300+ miles just for a look!!

We've had ours for 14 months and nothing has gone wrong. It's my daily driver which currently shows 55k having purchased it at 36k. We had a cracked windscreen which revealed a design fault leak but this forum came to the rescue with a how to. Lastly my choice to change the alloys as the ones they came with I wasn't 100% happy with. But as afar as the car is concerned it's been faultless. Its recently had a scheduled service but all the items replaced were service items. Mine is the small engine and old model and we love it, my wife can park it and she loves the commanding driving position. We are not fast drivers and are conscious of the size of the thing, fuel consumption is around 29/30mpg and we're old farts so insurance is cheap.
