4.4 Diesel Origins?

I know the 3.0 diesel (like my Evoque's 2.2d) has it's roots as a Ford engine, but where are the roots of the 4.4ltr diesel?

The 4.4 TDV8 is also a Ford-derived engine. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
